Description

Spring in Styria means war ...

Nineteen years last Bloody Years. The ruthless Grand Duke of Orso is mired in a fierce struggle with the absurd League of Eight. The white earth between them is covered in blood. Army marching. Heads fly from shoulders. Cities are burning. Meanwhile, bankers, priests and the ancient dark forces started a behind-the-scenes fuss, the purpose of which is to elect the king.

War may be hell, but for Monza Mercatto, the Serpent of Talin, the most dangerous and famous mercenary in the service of the Duke of Orso, this is also a damn good way to make money. Monza's victories made her popular - perhaps even too much, according to her employer. Loyal, thrown from the mountain and left to die, Monza found herself - a mutilated body and a soul-burning thirst for revenge. Whatever it costs her, seven people must die.

Spring in Styria means revenge.

Show / hide

Joe Abercrombie is a young British writer, author of the sensational dark fantasy trilogy “The First Law”, the hope of the genre, which is not only predicted for a great future after a successful debut, but the debut itself is recognized as an extraordinary event. Rights to his works were acquired in thirteen countries, and Abercrombie's books have already been translated into several languages, including German, Spanish, French, Czech, Swedish, Dutch, and Russian.

The future shaker of the "common places" of the fantasy genre was born on the last day of 1974 in Lancaster. He was educated at Lancaster Royal Grammar School, where he spent most of his time "playing computer games, throwing dice and drawing maps of nonexistent areas." Then he entered the University of Manchester, where he studied psychology. After which he first got on TV, and then became a freelance editor. Among his works were various documentaries, award ceremonies and concerts, as well as video clips of Barry White, Coldplay and The Killers (a list of the series he worked on can be found on the Abercrombie page on the IMDb website).

In 2002, Joe returned to his old dream - to rethink the established genre cliches alone, and seriously began to write his first novel, “The Blade Itself” (in the Russian translation called “Blood and Iron”), which tells about the misadventures of Loghen the Nine-Fingered, a barbarian with philosophical attitude to life. In 2004, he completed it, but another 2 years were spent searching for a publisher and publishing a book. Joe's acquaintance with Gillian Redfirn from Gollancz Publishing House led to the sequential signing of two contracts for the publication of a total of five novels by this native of Lancashire.

In 2007 - 2008, Abercrombie completed what was done with brilliance, releasing the novels “Before They Are Hanged” and “The Last Argument of Kings” - the continuation and, accordingly, the completion of the trilogy “The First Law”, in a sense, of one big book (which for example, is the “Song of Ice and Fire” by George Martin).

Among the extra-genre sources of his inspiration, Abercrombie especially notes the police thrillers J. Ellroy, the B. Cornwall trilogy about Arthur, as well as the television series popular in recent years: The Clan Soprano, The Wire, Battlestar Galactica and Deadwood.

After the release of the books, the reviewers did not skimp on the praise: “Delightfully Evil Book” (Guardian), “Dark, deeply ironic, full of brilliant characters who will find a response in the cynical side of your nature ...” (sfrevu.com), “Great reading: tough, pace and unpretentious ”(SFX magazine),“ We \u200b\u200bare right there, in the minds of these guys, thanks to the style of the author ... His understanding tone implies that what is happening will often be presented in an ironic light, with secondary characters that balance on the verge of Dickens ” (Dave Bradley, SFX Magazine).

Writers did not lag behind critics, responding enthusiastically, and maybe even enviously:

“If you like bloodless, grandiloquent fantasy, with characters as fragile as newspaper pages and as boring as gypsum figurines of saints, Joe Abercrombie will really ruin your day ...” Scott Lynch.

“In the world he invented, there are unbalanced contradictions ... and a realization of the inevitability of violence, which is very modern ... its reader is rewarded by many” Lisa Tuttle.

“The intricate storyline simply carries with it barbarian warriors who have genuine courage (and receive wounds that are most wicked), corrupted aristocrats with redeeming potential, wizards with confusing plans ... plus the cutest pastime cases of all time. The First Law trilogy is an adventure whose development of heroes takes place in tough, unpredictable, convincing ways, in the same tough and strange world. In a world that is sometimes terrible and always astounding ... ”John Mini.

“Abercrombie went straight to superstar status.” J. Vandermeer.

After such statements, it is somehow difficult to believe in skeptical statements about stagnation in the genre ...

He lived in North London. He currently lives in Bath, Somerset, with his wife Lou, two daughters and a son. She does not plan to change the current rhythm of life, and does not plan to switch from freelancers to the category of “professional writers”. By the way, anticipating idle curiosity, we can add that neither the writer Lynn Abercrombie nor the jazz guitarist John Abercrombie are his relatives.

For two consecutive years, he was nominated for the John W. Campbell Award. Also, twice his novels were recognized as "books of the year" by visitors to the popular thematic resource SFF World.

Together with Philip Pullman, Terry Pratchett and Tea Mievil in early 2008, Joe participated in the BBC television project “World of Fantasy”, where he talked about ... the influence of Mervyn Peak on contemporary British fantasy.

In June 2009, Abercrombie's new book, "Best Served Cold," was released. A separate novel about mercenaries, painful deaths and crooked paths, which takes place in the world of the “First Law” four years after the events of the debut trilogy. The author himself speaks of this book as "dark, tough, and very, very bloody ..." and characterizes it as a "fantasy thriller." She became his first work with an officially approved card. By the way, it was possible to get acquainted with a part of the main characters of the novel in the second volume of the debut trilogy. “Best Served Cold” was voted Best of the Year 2009 at SFFWorld, ranked 3rd in readership at SF Site, and was nominated for The August Derleth Fantasy Award.

At the end of June 2010, the story of Abercrombie (“The Fool Jobs”) appeared in the anthology of heroic fantasy of Lou Anders and Jonathan Strahan, which was already called the best in it by the first reviews. In 2011, the writer’s new novel, The Heroes, was released a year later on the shortlist of the British Fantasy Award and nominated for The David Gemmell Legend Award for Fantasy (DGLA). In 2012, the novel "A Red Country" was published, tentatively referred to as Joe as a "fantasy western."

Under a contract with Gollancz publishing house, Joe Abercrombie is supposed to write three more books about the world of the “First Law”, so he is preparing to translate the intentions of the new trilogy on paper. However, the author spends most of his time writing another cycle - fantasy for a young audience, in which, on behalf of the main teenage heroes, events that occur in a pseudo-medieval world that is not connected with the world of the Earth Circle are described. In addition, several Abercrombie short stories are being prepared for publication, and negotiations are underway to release a collection of his short stories.

“You can keep the Aragorn and Gandalf. I'd rather drink a pint of beer with Boromir and Saruman. Although, if you think about it, Saruman is probably the one who prefers pure malt drinks ... "

“It is clear that you cannot compose a story taking place in a fictional world without creating this world, and what you create must be convincing. I just think that such an aspect of epic fantasy as a detailed description of the world order often goes so far that it suppresses everything else. People are trying to “reprofess the Professor”; endlessly competing with each other in being the author of the most detailed, complex and long book. So, as if the whole idea was to draw a set of geographical maps and - wow, yes we solved all the problems! - it remains only to sketch out a couple of touching-clichéd characters. So that there would be someone to wander between Zanvonz and Vibwab, on the road, through a leisurely conversation, merging information about how their magical system functions ...

But for me, I am really interested in stories only in characters and dialogs ... Detailed descriptions are magnificent in those places where they are really needed. But not at the expense of those things that actually make history “what you need”, right? ”

“Ultimately, I suppose I was just trying to write books that I myself wanted to read. An epic mix of love, war, and everything else in the same vein. A certain amount of torture, a certain amount of intrigue. A bit of secrets and a bit of magic. A small number of bed scenes and a hell of a lot of violence, which causes an adrenaline rush. A couple of grandiose paintings that give rise to awe and a couple of sickening surprises on the way to an exciting, shocking climax. Laughter, tears and a little nausea. The whole gamut of emotions.

And most importantly - a few energetic characters, with tough but funny dialogues. Enough?

"Do not count for arrogance, can I ask you for this $ 10?"

From an interview with Abercrombie to sfx.co.uk

Conscience is just an excuse not to do what needs to be done. It is worth noting that, as always, Joe Abercrombie holds the bar and does not drop a bit of it. The book is very good, yes, perhaps it does not reach a bit to his trilogy “The First Law”, but it is not much inferior to it either. It should be noted that entertainment, colorfulness, black humor, blood, dirt and battles did not decrease, which pleases. Usually, you know how it happens, the author succeeded in 1.2, and maybe 3 books, and then there is consumer goods. But in my opinion, this will never apply to Joe. Joe keeps the brand and appreciates, loves and respects their readers, and will never feed them bad books!
Well, let's get down to the plot? And the plot we have pretty famously twisted .... Here you and the court intrigues, and civil wars, and sophisticated killings with the help of poisons, and gut wound on a fist. The main characters are Monza Mercatto and the Shake - known to us by the trilogy “First Law”. Shakes arrives in Styria in search of himself, to start a new life, to become a better person. And Monza Mercatto with her revenge and the desire to pay off the villains ... This is what the main storyline is based on ..

In my opinion, the work is quite philosophical, if you read it between the lines. If you look a little from a different angle, it turns out that the book is about "a person’s attempt to find himself in this big world", the need to choose between "good" and "evil", about the choice between two "evils" ... The author in one of the dialogs illustrates a pretty good example, namely:
You spend your whole life preparing for something to come. I climbed countless hills. Crossed many rivers. Even the sea swam across, abandoning everything he knew, and reached Styria. But he got off the ship and saw already on the pier that exactly the same people and exactly the same life were waiting for me here. The next valley is no different from this. She's no better, anyway. And I think I learned ... just to stay where I am. To be who I am. As we see, wherever you go, whatever you do, you will remain as you are, and to change yourself at least a little, you need to make great efforts. Some of the main characters of the book did it, but others didn’t. Read it yourself and find out everything! I hope I managed to interest you
In conclusion, I want to say that the book is very good! I recommend it to everyone, I look forward to reading Red Country and the Half King.!

Well, in principle, everyone already knows what kind of guy this Abercrombie is and what kind of books he writes. Therefore, I won’t especially talk about it, I can only say that here too, branded black humor, violence, dismemberment, foul language, sex and charming bastards were brought in abundance. Unless the level of violence, compared with the main trilogy, has reached that critical point, beyond which gloominess develops into grotesque. But this is clearly consistent with Joe's plan, because this novel is focused more on heroes than on some global events. And therefore, the epic and atmosphere were a bit pushed into the background with catchy plot moves and sparkling dialogs. But this is all the details, in fact the book is very, very high-level and will undoubtedly appeal to all Joe fans. And I wanted to talk about something else. For some reason, Joe Abercrombie is all called a subverter of canons and a follower of Martin. Say, this guy will turn all fantasy cliches inside out and go forged boots according to stereotypes and patterns. And with this, I fundamentally disagree. No doubt Joe’s books are realistic, especially when it comes to descriptions of warriors and battles. There really are no uniquely positive heroes, and under pain of death, each of the characters is able to behave like the last scumbag. But this is not so original, it is generally almost a common place for all dark fantasy. Yes, Abercrombie writes gorgeous, juicy, dialogue and humor are great. But the notorious cliches, here they are, close-up. Unkillable heroes surrounded by the armor of authorial bias. Pianos in the bushes like a falling statue, which will crush a dangerous enemy at the most critical moment, or an invincible ally who will suddenly prove himself and save everyone at the last moment. Even Monza’s fight with Ganmark is built according to the standard scheme, where the hero first receives the full program, but then miraculously takes over. Joe’s books are certainly gorgeous, but at least kill me, I don’t see anything innovative in his exaggerated realism. Is the book good? Of course, run to read! Is it worth believing the fans who make Joe the greatest "fantasy" of our time? I would beware, in the end, the fans are such fans))
