The name of the "English Society for Lighting the City of Moscow with Flowing Gas" thoroughly explains what this organization did. In the 19th century, gas began to be used to illuminate the streets of London, Berlin, Paris, and by 1861 Moscow also became interested in the use of modern technologies, providing the aforementioned Society with a long name with land for the construction of a gas plant. The territory was allocated in Susalny Lane on the banks of the Chernogryazka River.

The construction of the Moscow Gas Plant began in 1865; the first buildings for the production of gas from coke were erected. Two buildings, intended for offices and a dormitory for workers, faced the side street. They were designed by Fyodor Dmitriev. And gas tanks - gas storage tanks that can withstand heavy operating loads and a corrosive environment - were erected by architect Rudolf Bernhard, professor at the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers. The diameter of these giant cylinders is 40 meters.

By 1882, Moscow streets were already lit by 9,000 gas lamps, but the townspeople were in no hurry to use gas in their homes. It was not cheap, and the kerosene dealers spread rumors about the gas's health risks. Bouquier and Goldsmith's company was counting on completely different dividends and after the expiration of the concession, the company was transferred to the ownership of the city.

In 1911, the Moscow City Duma allocated 4 million rubles for the reconstruction and development of the gas plant. With this money, in order to increase the plant's capacity, six new factory buildings and an additional gas tank of a smaller diameter were erected according to the designs of architects Maxim Geppener, Nikolai Milyukov, Mikhail Stepanov and Alexander Roop. The overlaps were calculated by engineer Vladimir Shukhov. The new buildings house a control room and a retort department, an ammonia plant, facilities for gas purification from impurities, a meter plant, and a water gas plant. During this reconstruction, half of the old large factory building was demolished.

In Soviet times, the Moscow Gas Plant grew with two more buildings and, until the middle of the 20th century, provided gas supply to Moscow, but after the Saratov-Moscow pipeline was commissioned in 1946, the need to keep harmful production in the center of the capital disappeared and the enterprise switched to the production of gas equipment: stoves, meters and other equipment. In the 1990s, the plant began to produce gas shut-off valves, and the enterprise itself was renamed into the ARMA plant.

In 2002, the "Arma" plant ceased to exist and the question arose about the demolition of most of the ensemble due to "the lack of historical and architectural value and the unsatisfactory technical condition of the supporting structures." After discussions with the participation of all interested parties, it was decided to preserve the facades of the buildings with a complete restructuring of the internal premises for modern needs. Currently, the factory premises are leased to tenants - restaurants and cafes, art galleries, clubs, design studios, shops and show rooms.

The shortest way to "Arma" lies through the underground passage from the Kursk railway station and the "Kurskaya" metro station. On weekdays, it is crowded here, employees of the nearest institutes and students go from the trains.

Nizhny Susalny Lane got its name from the factory that once produced gold leaf. Only a couple of houses on the even side of the lane remind of old Moscow.

All Moscow enterprises that became objects of redevelopment were built before the Great Patriotic War, and volunteers went from each to the front. In memory of those who did not return, the factory workers set up memorials with lists of those who died in the war. The "Immortal Regiment" of the Moscow Gas Plant is carved into granite in one of the main squares of "Arma". But there are other examples as well. After the closure of production, an unexpected question arose, who will now take care of the monuments? It is sad, but some were abandoned (ZIL, Esters) or completely dismantled (at Yamskiy Pole).

There are three checkpoints to enter the "Armu", the main one is located in Nizhny Susalny Lane, the other two are not yet so comfortable.

You can walk around the territory for a long time, looking at the old red bricks combined with modern glazing of buildings. But there are practically no small signs of a bygone era, not even a single sewer hatch of pre-revolutionary times or the first years of Soviet power has been found.

“More about galleries, then“ Arma ”is about nightclubs," wrote The Village at the dawn of its history in 2010. And Denis Simachev, who located his studio on the outskirts of the Kursk railway station, inviting friends here, promised that everything "will be like in London." There is no well-known designer or many other signs of the 2000s at "Arma", and the space has been actively renovated for several years now. Continuing about the new life of Moscow's creative clusters, The Village learned about what the new "Arma" will be like.

History

The construction of the Moscow Gas Plant began in 1865 - four years earlier, several merchants had proposed to the Governor-General to organize gas lighting in the city. The tender for the concession was won by the English Society for Lighting the City of Moscow with Flowing Gas. It bought part of the gardens on the banks of the Chernogryazka River ( now sealedright tributary of the Yauza. - Approx. ed.) not far from Nizhny Susalny lane. The first factory buildings were two two-storey buildings for offices and living quarters of workers, designed by architect Fyodor Dmitriev. Brick gas tanks were designed by architect Rudolf Bernhard. The gas plant itself was built from several workshops between the tanks and the administrative building. Already in 1868, 3 thousand gas lamps were lit in Moscow. In 1905, the plant was transferred to the city, and several years later, to increase its capacity, its reconstruction began. According to the project of engineer and architect Vladimir Shukhov, six new factory buildings and an additional gas tank were erected on the territory.

In the Soviet years, the plant was an enterprise of state importance: until the middle of the 20th century, it supplied all of Moscow with gas. However, after the Saratov-Moscow gas pipeline was commissioned in 1946, the need for fuel production disappeared. Production was reoriented to the manufacture of gas equipment: stoves, meters and other equipment. According to the 1971 General Plan of Moscow, the plant was included in the number of enterprises being taken out of the city.
In the 1990s, they began to produce gas shut-off valves there, and the enterprise itself was finally renamed to "Armu". Production was stopped in 2002, and tenants began to occupy the empty workshops.

"Arma" - the territory of creativity

After privatization in the 1990s, the plant at various times belonged to the banks "Slavyansky" and "Vizavi". Today the owner of the territory is the Big City company. Designers Denis Simachev and Katya Gomiashvili, Alexander Yakut's gallery and the Gazgolder club became the first tenants at "Arma". Thanks to them, "Arma" has become one of the centers of the cultural life of Moscow. In 2008, the Zhivi media group moved to "Armu", the "Arma 17" club was opened. It is the low rental rates in unrepaired buildings that have attracted a large number of creative projects to "Armu".

In the mid-2000s, a large-scale reconstruction was planned on the territory of the former plant. The project involved the demolition of most of the buildings, but the concept attracted public attention and the work was canceled. The press service of "Arma", however, notes that in the past there were many plans for the development of the territory and not all of them were related to the owners.

"Arma" - business park

The Bolshoi Gorod company did not abandon plans for overhaul, and work began in 2011. Four gas tanks were repaired first, then - the building of the Soviet period next door. After the renovation, prices have also increased: as they say at "Arma", now the technical equipment of the objects corresponds to class A. At the same time, early tenants, including the "Live" media group, moved out. Last year, the Arma 17 nightclub announced its move.

The renovation of the former auxiliary workshops of the gas plant, built at the beginning of the 20th century, is now being completed. A pedestrian zone, spacious parking lots and new navigation will appear on the territory of the former plant. The developer will beautify the surrounding area. The goal of the changes is to create a space that is attractive to the general public and retail and office tenants. The renewed territory of the plant is now called a business park. Among the new tenants are two fitness clubs, beauty salons, restaurants, coffee shops, dry cleaners, travel agencies, and a medical center.

The reconstruction of the buildings is carried out by the architectural bureau "Sergey Kiselev and Partners" - the authors of the business complex "Mirax Plaza", the office of "Yandex" and a spectacular house on the corner of Ostozhenka and 1st Zachatyevsky lane. The work is planned to be completed by the end of 2015.
