Chemistry and life. Chemistry and life (magazine) Chemistry and life magazine read

Why do we need a replenished archive of the journal "Chemistry and Life"?

  1. To enjoy reading interesting articles and looking at unusual drawings.
  2. To find some material that you really want to read again (even if you can’t remember what year it was published).
  3. H to write a good essay on physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, materials science and many other sciences. After all, “Chemistry and Life” has written about everything more than once since 1965, that is, its archive is a unique encyclopedia of knowledge.
  4. Finally, in order to ensure that scattered log files taken from the Internet were in one place, were combined into a searchable database and would never be lost.

To work normally with the archive, you need a computer running MS Windows 7.0 or higher, which has 5 GB of free hard disk space.

You can get the archive on a flash card, where the distribution kit and registration key are located. The editors send it by mail. Or you can independently download a 3.7 GB distribution kit from the Internet, and after payment receive a registration key. With this key, the archive can be installed on three computers.

The archive is replenished free of charge with fresh issues for the first six months after registration. Next - by subscribing to the electronic version of the magazine.

About the electronic archive

The popular science magazine "Chemistry and Life" (since 1997 called "Chemistry and Life - XXI Century") is a magazine made by chemists for non-chemists, biologists for non-biologists, physicists for non-physicists. It will be of interest to those who are concerned about the problems of modern science and who are curious about how the world around us works. The electronic archive of the magazine was prepared by the Aurum Group company at the request of the magazine publisher - ANO Center NaukaPress. The magazine's materials are presented in DjVu and PDF formats: the pages of the magazine are saved in the same form as in the printed edition. To display the archive, a specialized viewer program is used, which has a convenient user interface. The program allows you to conduct a full-text search, flip through the pages of the magazine, copy text and images for non-commercial use.

System requirements

Operating system: 32 or 64-bit operating system of the Windows family, version 7 and later.

Processor: 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor with a clock speed of 1 GHz or higher.

RAM: at least 2 GB (4 GB or more recommended).

Free disk space: 5 GB.

All screen resolutions above 1024x768 are supported. The higher the screen resolution and the physical size of the monitor, the more comfortable it will be to work with magazine pages in the program.

Installing and launching the program

The archive user independently downloads the installation files of the electronic archive from the journal’s website ( . (If you purchased the archive on a flash drive, there is no need to download the archive installation files. Your key required for registration is indicated on the package.) The size of the downloaded files is quite large, more than 3 GB, so the download procedure may take a long time.) After payment the user receives a key necessary for registration and operation of the program.

Run the arhivHiJ file. exe and follow the step-by-step operations requested by the installer. During installation, you need to specify the folder in which the archive will be stored. It is in this folder that the main archive data, more than 3 GB in size, will be placed. (If you want to create a special folder for this, you must do this in advance.)

To register you will need to provide your email address. If you don't have a mailbox, create one in advance. Important messages will be sent to this address, for example, about the status of your subscription to updating the archive.

To register, indicate the key sent to you when the program asks for it. ATTENTION: To register and launch the archive for the first time, you must connect your computer to the Internet.

After successful registration, by default, shortcuts with the name “Chemistry and Life: a replenishable journal archive” will be created in the Start menu and on the Desktop for the application that works with the archive (Fig. 1). By clicking on one of these shortcuts, you can start working with the archive.

User interface

After registration and in the future, every time you start, a window with the main page of the archive will appear (Fig. 2). On the top panel there are buttons “full screen mode”, “minimize window”, “maximize window”, “close”. The window size can also be changed using the mouse cursor while holding down the left button.

Rice. 2. Home page archive A

From the main page you can enter any of the main sections of the program - the “Login”, “Get the latest issue”, “Help”, “About the magazine” buttons. To exit the program, click on the [X] button on the top panel.

The contents of the magazine are presented in the form of a tree. At the beginning of work, the contents tree will be opened on the first page of the latest issue of the journal available in the archive.

Rice. 3. View of the window for working with the archive

The program's capabilities and navigation through the archive are described in the following sections. To exit the program, click on the [X] button on the top panel.

The user interface of the electronic archive is the original shell for viewing the electronic journal. Figures 3 and 4 show the main areas and controls of the electronic archive viewer.

The interface can be divided into two main parts: the control panel and the content viewing areas. The content viewing area, in turn, is divided vertically into two equal areas by a splitter ruler. The right and left panes have their own menus that independently control the appearance of the content (see below). At the top of the panel, next to the name "Electronic edition of the journal "Chemistry and Life", there are buttons "Full screen mode", "Collapse window", "Expand/Resize window", "Close program". Below are the buttons "Table of Contents", "Page", "Search" (these three buttons are present on both the right and left sides of the panel and control the right and left viewing areas, respectively), the "Forward" and "Back" paging buttons, the "Hand/Text Selection" tool button ", as well as the buttons "Fit to page", "Fit to window width", "Zoom in" and "Zoom out" (+ and -). The central part of the panel shows the numbers of the pages being viewed.

Rice. 4. Control panel

The content of the viewing area is configured using the "Table of Contents" and "Page" buttons. Both the right and left areas can show a table of contents in the form of a tree (year, issue, magazine page) or a magazine page. If the “Page” mode is selected in both areas (Fig. 5), a two-page display mode is implemented (the user sees two pages in a row and can flip through the magazine using the “Forward” and “Back” buttons). The size of the right and left viewing areas can be changed by moving the ruler - splitter between them with the mouse while holding down the left button. If the scale “Full page” or “For the width of the window” is selected on the left and right, then when you move the splitter, the pages (Fig. 5, 6) will be scaled automatically in accordance with the new size, i.e., increase in one window and decrease in friend.

Rice. 5. Two-page display mode. Moving the splitter along the arrow will make the left page smaller and the right page larger

Rice. 6. Changing the window width results in a change in image scale

Content

The archive contains all the journals "Chemistry and Life", starting with the very first, published in 1965. Each year of the magazine is represented by a section. Inside each such section there are folders with separate journal numbers (Fig. 7).

Rice. 7. Working with the Contents window

The contents display sections corresponding to the internal division of the electronic document into sections, chapters, articles, etc. If you select a page with the mouse, then this page will be displayed in the adjacent window(see Fig. 5, 6).

Hotkeys:

1. Open / Close tree node: right / left arrow;

2. Move through the tree: down/up arrows.

Page

In the "Page" mode, the selected page of the electronic archive is displayed. This mode provides all the necessary functions for convenient viewing. You can zoom in and out using the corresponding menu buttons, “+” and “-”. This can also be done from the keyboard using the Ctrl+ and Ctrl- buttons.

To quickly fit the page into the window, click the "Fit to Page" button. When you select the “Fit to window width” button, the image, accordingly, occupies the entire width of the window, but may not fit entirely in height. At high magnifications, when part of the page appears outside the boundaries of the window, you can “drag” the page with the mouse, having first selected the “Hand” tool. The letter T will appear on the button; By pressing it again, you select the text selection mode (see below). In addition, the image can be moved using the keyboard arrows (previously click the mouse in the viewing window, making it active).

This mode also provides a function for selecting and copying text on a page (Fig. 8). To do this, select the “Text Selection” mode (if the “Hand” tool was enabled; if not, then text selection is enabledby default), then select the desired text with the mouse cursor and press Ctrl+C (or right-click and select “Copy text” from the drop-down menu, see below). You can paste the copied text into any text editor, for example, MS Word or Notepad, using the Ctrl+V keys.

Rice. 8. This is what the page looks like with the text highlighted. Blue highlighted frag ment can be copied

Context menu

When you right-click in the viewing window, a context menu appears (Fig. 9) with the buttons “Hand Tool”, “Text Selection Tool”, “Copy Text”, “Copy Image”, “Zoom In”, “Zoom Out”, “Fit to Width” window", "Fit to page". All of the above functions can be selected from this menu. When you select the "Copy Image" function, the magazine page you are viewing is copied as an image to the memory buffer. After this, the page image can be pasted into MS Word or a graphics editor using the Ctrl+V keys.

Rice. 9. Context menu

For information about switching between viewing modes and turning pages, see the section Navigating the program.

Search

To search the electronic archive, use the "Search" button in the top menu. The search panel (Fig. 10) consists of a main panel for creating a query and a lower panel in which search results are displayed.

R is. 10. Search window with the entered query and search results

There are two types of search: "Simple" and "Complex". Simple is enabled by default; complex search is activated by pressing the button of the same name (it is highlighted).

For a simple search, enter your search query using the keyboard or copy text from the clipboard into the main panel input window. A search query can consist of a single word, phrase, phrase, or piece of text. Then click on the magnifying glass image. If the query consists of more than one word, before starting the search, use the buttons under the search box to select “At least one of the words” or “All words from the query” (the first option is recommended if the second does not produce results). Then click on "Search" (the magnifying glass icon in the search box).

A list of the top 30 pages that most closely match your search criteria will appear at the bottom of the search bar (Figure 10). If there are more results, numbers will appear at the bottom to scroll through the list; to see the next 30 results, click on the number 2, etc. Search results are sorted by rating by default. You can choose to sort by date by clicking on the corresponding button: then the most recent publications in which the word of interest appears will be shown first. When you click again, the sorting will be reversed, from earlier publications to later ones.

Once the results have appeared in the bottom panel, you can refine your search by entering a new query and selecting the “search in found” option. So, if the first query was "transition metals" and the second was "iron", then you will only see pages that contain both "transition metals" and "iron".

To view the desired page, left-click on it and it will appear in the adjacent window. The sections of text that match the search query will be underlined in red on the page. To clear the request window and enter a new one, click the [X] icon.

Please note that the search allows you to find words with case endings (when you search for "iron" you will find both "iron" and "gland"). However, to find articles by a specific author or mention of a person, you need to type one surname (“Yashin”, “Kleschenko”), as well as the surname and initials with dots without spaces, for example, “A.Ya.Yashin”, “E. Kleschenko ". This is useful to know so that instead of a list of articles by an author named Komarov, you won’t find many articles about blood-sucking insects.

Complex search (Fig. 11) provides more options. In this mode, you can search for pages that contain certain words but not others. For example, if you search for pages that contain the word "mycoplasma" but not the word "Venter", you will find references to that organism that are not associated with Craig Venter's synthetic genome project. This mode also has buttons “At least one of the words”, “All words from the query” and the option “search in the found”.

Rice. 11. Complex search window

Recommendations

In conclusion, a few recommendations for comfortable work with the electronic archive. Before starting the archive, close unused programs, games, etc., as they can slow down the system. Use two-page mode to view the magazine. If you have opened the “Contents”, “Search”, “Catalogue” or “Bookmarks” panel on one side, and the “Page” panel on the other side, move the splitter (separator) all the way towards the content tree. This will help save space for viewing the page. Use keyboard hot buttons, they can significantly increase the speed of your work and make it more convenient. When copying text using the "Ctrl+C" hotkey, make sure that the mouse cursor is in the page display area.

Story

The need for the publication of the popular scientific journal KhiZh was caused by the expansion and deepening of the chemicalization of the national economy in the USSR, which was due to two resolutions of the Plenum of the CPSU Central Committee: dated May 7, 1958 - “On accelerating the development of the chemical industry and especially the production of synthetic materials and products from them for meeting the needs of the population and the needs of the national economy" and dated December 13, 1963 - "Accelerated development of the chemical industry is the most important condition for the rise in agricultural production and the growth of the people's well-being."
The first editor of the magazine (1965-1996) was Academician I.V. Petryanov-Sokolov, a professor at the Mendeleev Institute, known for his social activities in protecting the environment.
In 1996, the academic version of the journal at the Nauka publishing house ceased to exist. The magazine began publishing under a new name in 1997 (published by the Chemistry and Life company). The editor of the magazine was L. N. Strelnikova.
