Photo chronicle of tass. Nine decades "photo chronicles of tass Tass photobank of images

90 years ago, a press cliché department was organized as part of TASS. Today, the editorial staff of TASS photo information (formerly TASS Photo Chronicle) is the oldest photo agency in Russia and the CIS, specializing in the production of photo news in real time.

The history of "Photo Chronicle TASS" began in 1926, when the ROSTA agency created a workshop for the production of printing clichés of photographs for central print media. Over time, the workshop expanded into a full-fledged photography service and turned into an independent editorial office that collected information, created photo reports and individual photographs and distributed them.

During the Great Patriotic War, the reporters of "Photochronicle" made the most significant contribution to the creation of a documentary photo chronicle of military operations. During these years, such well-known photojournalists as Yevgeny Khaldey, Grigory Lipskerov, Mark Redkin, Leonid Velikzhanin, Sergey Loskutov, Naum Granovsky, Emmanuel Evzerikhin, Nikolai Sitnikov worked on the editorial staff. Their photographs went down in history and constitute the golden fund of national photography, as well as the shooting of the Victory Parade, the memory of which was immortalized for posterity by the shots of Tassov photojournalists.

In the post-war period, Photo Chronicle holds a strong position in the domestic information field and actively enters the international market. And here the leading photojournalists are masters of political reporting, the leaders of which are Vadim Kovrigin, Vasily Egorov, Vladimir Savostyanov, Valentin Mastakov, Viktor Koshevoy, Valentin Sobolev, and later - Vladimir Musaelyan, Viktor Badan, Eduard Pasov, Alexander Chumichek.

Since the mid-60s, TASS began to master color photography. In the 70s, the agency's photo archive was already actively replenished with color negatives, and at the same time, color production began to work in Photochronicle.

80s - peak in terms of circulation of TASS photo information. Not only central, republican, regional, regional publications of the former USSR, but also regional and even large-circulation newspapers received TASS photographs in their editorial offices. The photo chronicle was a monopolist in the release of official, government photo information and covered all aspects of the country's life: economy, social spheres, culture and sports. In those years, Valentin Kuzmin, Vitaly Sozinov, Valery Zufarov, Viktor Velikzhanin, Igor Utkin, Roman Denisov, Valery Khristoforov, Boris Kavashkin, Igor Zoin, Anatoly Morkovkin became laureates of prestigious international photo contests.

Special correspondents of the agency witnessed many historical events and told about them in their reports: Vasily Egorov - from the capital of revolutionary Cuba and from the drifting station "SP-1", Lev Porter and Valentin Sobolev - from the fighting Vietnam, the orders marked the brilliant long-term work of Albert Pushkarev , filming literally "from under the hooves" of fiery spaceships. Valery Zufarov became the laureate of the "Golden Eye" for the pictures taken over the crater of the fourth block of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in May 1986.

The names of well-known but younger reporters coincided with a turning point in our lives. Perestroika was coming to an end, the Soviet Union collapsed, and the era of war correspondents came again, but now of a different, post-perestroika time. Andrey Soloviev, Gennady Khamelyanin, Sergey Zhukov, Anatoly Morkovkin have worked in hot spots several times. These are Nagorno-Karabakh, and Tajikistan, and Abkhazia, the coup of 1991 and the confrontation of 1993, later - Chechnya. In 1993, ITAR-TASS photojournalist Andrei Soloviev, who was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage, was killed in Abkhazia; in 2000, Vladimir Yamina went missing in Chechnya.

With the beginning of perestroika, the ideological ban on coverage of many aspects of public and political life was lifted, and the agency's reporters received a second aboutmore freedom in choosing topics. In addition, there is a demand for photographs that show reality from unusual points of view. This contributed to the professional growth of "Photochronicle". However, the agency soon fell on hard times, because, despite the rapid development of print media and the opening of many new newspapers and magazines, the monopoly on supplying them with photo information was lost. The largest photo information agencies such as Reuters, Associated Press and others, which have a worldwide coverage of correspondent networks and advanced technical equipment, have gained access to the Russian domestic market. The emergence and development of the Internet and methods of instant delivery of photographic images to any consumer forced "Photochronicle" to develop the latest methods of distribution. Thanks to a cooperation agreement with the photo service of the Reuters agency, an operative news feed was created in the mid-1990s, and foreign partners gained access to photographs of the Photochronicle from the regions. Since 1992, after the head agency TASS was renamed into ITAR-TASS, TASS Photo Chronicle was renamed into the Photo ITAR-TASS Agency. Currently, the agency has its own technical equipment for forming a news feed and is one of the five largest suppliers of photo information for Russian news publications.

Today the photobank tassphoto.com is the largest database of photographs among all media in Russia and the CIS. It has over 10 million contemporary and archival images of various genres and themes. There are about 1 million historical photographs and negatives alone. In 2015, the photobank was replenished with another 3 million 621 thousand 853 pictures.

In the anniversary year, TASS will delight Muscovites and guests of the capital with many interesting events and exhibitions. For example, in the White Hall of the Moscow Union of Journalists, a meeting was recently held with a veteran of the TASS photo chronicle, a member of the UJM Vladimir Musaelyan, who has been with TASS for over half a century. He worked with all the secretaries general, for 14 years he was Leonid Brezhnev's personal photographer. When I started at the main news agency of the country, there were mostly military correspondents who had returned from the front. He studied philanthropy and attitude to work from those whose pictures went down in history.

“We believed that if a profession chose us, we should serve it. And they served faithfully, ”says Vladimir Musaelyan.

On March 8, the photo exhibition "Spring in Moscow of the 60s" was opened at the Fili PKiO. It shows previously unknown photographs from the archives of the Russian news agency TASS.

Despite the fact that the photographs are devoid of color, they perfectly convey the vivid picture and atmosphere of Moscow in the 1950-1960s of the twentieth century. Visitors to the Fili PKiO will see what the central streets, embankments and parks were like in those years, how the celebrations were organized, what transport the residents of the capital used to ride, what young Muscovites played, and a lot of other interesting details.

The exposition, which will last until the end of April this year, presents the works of famous TASS reporters - masters of Soviet and Russian photojournalism. Among them are Naum Granovsky, Lev Porter, Victor Budan, Vladimir Savostyanov, Sergei Preobrazhensky, Valentin Mastyukov, Nikolai Akimov and others.

A photo exhibition dedicated to the anniversary was also displayed in the TASS windows.

We present a selection of the brightest works of photojournalists of the ITAR-TASS agency for 2014.

As the main editorial office of photo information.

The agency is best known as TASS Photo Chronicle, since it had this name for several decades. In everyday speech, it was often called "Photochronicle", denoting one of the largest agencies that create a photo chronicle of the internal life of the USSR for use in domestic publications. Photo Chronicle TASS was the largest supplier of news photo information for the Soviet print media and had an extensive network of correspondent points that made it possible to receive photographs from every corner of the Soviet Union. The second major photo agency in the country was the Novosti Press Agency (APN, now RIA Novosti) Photo Service, which produced mainly photo information for foreign publications.

Agency history

The history of "Photochronicle TASS" began in 1926, when the ROSTA agency created a workshop for the production of printing clichés of photographs for central print media. During these years, such well-known photojournalists as Yevgeny Khaldey, who filmed the hoisting of the Soviet flag over the Reichstag, Emmanuel Yevzerikhin, Mark Redkin, Max Alpert and others worked on the editorial staff. In addition, the agency carried out a centralized collection of photographic documents, collaborating with photographers from other publications.

In the post-war years, the agency became the central body of the country's photo information, receiving the name "The main editorial office of TASS photo information under the USSR Council of Ministers." The editorial office was located in a building at 4, 25 October Street, now Nikolskaya Street, and later at 12 Bolshaya Dorogomilovskaya Street, in a former school building. For the Moscow Olympics, Photo Chronicle received another building in the neighborhood: at 7 Bryanskaya Street, where it was located until recently. In the building on Bolshaya Dorogomilovskaya there were still workshops for exhibition photo printing, warehouses and workshops for the repair of photographic equipment. In the mid-2000s, the agency abandoned the building on Dorogomilovskaya, and at the moment it is abandoned and uninhabited. The coverage of the CPSU congresses and the official chronicle became practically the monopoly of TASS Photo Chronicles, which supplied photographs for all domestic and foreign publications. Particularly important state events in the regions were covered on-line with the use of photo telegraphs to transmit pictures, which were gradually equipped in all bureaux. Since February 7, 1957, the phototelegraph has been used by the agency to transfer finished photographs to the largest foreign consumers of photo information. By the end of the stagnation, the agency's main product was semi-official photo reports on party events and the achievements of the socialist economy. Central and local newspapers and magazines were obliged to publish the materials of "Photochronicle", the deductions for which brought the agency a guaranteed income.

With the beginning of Perestroika, the ideological ban on covering many aspects of public and political life was lifted, and the agency's reporters received a significantly greater degree of freedom in choosing topics. In addition, there was a demand for photographs showing reality from unusual points of view, spurring the professional growth of "Photochronicle". However, the agency soon fell on hard times, because, despite the rapid development of print media and the opening of many new newspapers and magazines, the monopoly on supplying them with photo information was lost. Major photo information agencies such as Reuters, Associated Press and others with worldwide coverage of correspondent networks and advanced technical equipment have gained access to the Russian domestic market. Since 1992, after the head agency of TASS was renamed into ITAR-TASS, TASS Photo Chronicle was renamed into Photo ITAR-TASS Agency. Currently, the agency has its own technical equipment for forming a news feed and is one of the five largest suppliers of photo information for Russian news editions.

Importance for domestic photojournalism

Despite the ideological nature of the activities of "Photochronicle", its professional level for many years was maintained at a high level in order to ensure the competitiveness and image of the Soviet school of journalistic photography abroad. Not only Moscow photojournalists could cooperate with the agency, but also reporters from the regions, while improving their skills. In fact, "Photochronicle" until the end of the 1990s was the main photobank of the country, working with many freelance authors at home and abroad. The overwhelming majority of well-known Russian photojournalists, one way or another, have ever collaborated with "Photochronicle". Many current employees of foreign photo agencies, who are of Russian origin, also come from the walls of TASS Photo Chronicle. The agency's reporters have repeatedly received prizes from prestigious international photo contests, including World Press Photo, in which Photochronicle was a regular participant, along with its foreign competitors.
