NRL referee Ben Cummins has once again found himself in the firing line after Paul Green launched an attack on the whistleblower in the wake of North Queenslands 16-8 loss to Melbourne. After being on the end of Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinsons infamous ANZAC Day spray, Cummins was once again accused on disrespectful behaviour by the Cowboys at 1300SMILES Stadium on Saturday night. The Cowboys complained of being blow off when approaching the decorated official for an explanation and the Storm being given the benefit of a host of contentious calls. There were a number of 50-50 calls that didnt go our way, Green said. There was a lot of discussion earlier in the year from the Roosters coach Trent Robinson about the way the head ref Ben Cummins engages with players.I thought there was probably evidence of that again tonight.I thought we were entitled to query some of those decisions, particularly when you see the replays. While Greens post-match comments lacked the venom of Robinsons tirade, he is facing the prospect of a fine given his comments could be interpreted as an attack on Cummins credibility. There were a couple of contentious calls there, which I can cop, as long as they go both ways, Green said.Jimmy Tamou was penalised there for a Cameron Smith error and from what I could see there was no way he was not square. That gives them field position and I think they got a try off the back of it.Javid Bowen plays the ball and clearly their foot is involved in that and yet they call a scrum.Theyre the calls. I dont think they evened out.Michael Morgan, when he got thrown into touch, if that had been the tryline and they had picked him back and thrown him into the in-goal, it would have been a different decision.Again, Im not here to whinge about refs decisions.Cowboys stand-in skipper Matt Scott echoed Greens frustrations, saying the rub of the green went Melbournes way.A couple of the calls that I thought were incorrect, you look at the replays and you see a foot hit the ball out of Jango (Bowen)s hand, Scott said.Im asking `shouldnt he be allowed room to play in the ruck? And Im just getting blown off.Thats a bit hard to cop when I see the replays showing Im correct. PITTSBURGH -- The rafters are a little more crowded at recently renamed PPG Arena. The Pittsburgh Penguins raised their fourth Stanley Cup championship banner to the ceiling before their season-opening 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night. Pittsburgh beat the San Jose Sharks in six games in June for the title. The Penguins finished off an elegant pregame ceremony by having team captain and Conn Smythe winner Sidney Crosby skate to center ice as he held the Cup. Crosby, who is out indefinitely with a concussion, dressed in his familiar No.dddddddddddd87 jersey for the occasion while the crowd roared.Crosby then placed the Cup on a stand at center ice and stood along the blue line with the rest of his teammates as the banner joined the tributes to the 1991, 1992 and 2009 Cup winners. The Associated Press contributed to this report. NEW YORK -- The Los Angeles Clippers are halfway through a six-game road trip covering approximately 6,133 miles. The first stop went well but the last two stops turned into nightmares for the Clippers. The Brooklyn Nets can only hope two straight losses constitute a nightmare these days. The Clippers continue their road trip Tuesday night and look to rebound from two double-digit losses when they face the Nets, who are dealing with an unsightly seven-game losing streak.Los Angeles flew 1,240 miles to Dallas and improved to 14-2 by shooting 50.6 percent in a 20-point victory Wednesday. Then the Clippers flew 1,000 miles to Detroit, trailed by 12 after the first quarter and lost by 11 on Friday.Following the loss to the Pistons, Los Angeles flew 240 miles to Indiana and once the Clippers took the court, things went even worse in a 91-70 loss to the Pacers. Los Angeles shot 31.4 percent, committed 20 turnovers and was outrebounded by 12.The Clippers were held to 70 points or fewer for the first time since an 86-67 loss at Utah on Dec. 5, 2003. Los Angeles committed 20 turnovers for the only the 10th time since Doc Rivers took the coaching job in 2013 and the Clippers were held to their lowest shooting percentage since a 31.3 percent showing Feb. 27, 2008 vs. Portland. We dont turn the ball over, but we did tonight. Rivers said. Its one of those nights. I just thought the turnovers changed the game early. They had 20 more shots than us at halftime, and we didnt seem very confident. I thought we settled the entire night offensively.Rivers may be right. His team was outscored 42-16 in the paint and were 15-of-50 on shots classified as jumpers.Blake Griffin led the Clippers with 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Chris Paul and J.J. Reddick were a combined 4-of-18 from the floor. This was just all bad, Paul said. We shot it bad. Our defense was bad. I think I had four turnovers in the first quarter. ...So this was just a bad game for us. But dont take anything away from Indiana. They beat us.Now the Clippers will travel 648 miles to oppose a team that has been bleeding for the last two weeks. The Nets were 4-5 when they took the court against the Clippers on Nov. 14. They were blitzed 127-95 and have continued losing, with six of those defeats coming by double-digits.The latest setback was a 122-105 decision to the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night. The Nets had a one-point lead at halftime but again struggled in the third quarter.Brooklyn was outscored 34-18 in the third quarter and in this skid teams are outscoring the Nets by a 222-150 margin. In those quarters, the Nets have shot 37.4 percent (55-of-147) while allowing opponents to shoot 53.3 percent (80-of-150).Were just getting outplayed and outworked, thats it, said center Brook Lopez, who has scored 25 points and shot 40 percent in third quarters during this skid. The latest third quarter was so ineffective for the Nets that DeMarcus Cousins had the same amount of points as Brooklyn. It resulted in a 15-point deficit and in their last seven games, the average deficit for the Nets has been 18 points entering the fourth quarter. We have to fix the third quarter blues, Brooklyn coach Kenny Atkinson said. For some reason we dont come out with the requisite energy that we need.Sean Kilpatrick led the Nets with 22 points and was fouled hard by Matt Barnes. The flagrant foul resulted in Barnes ejection and briefly got the Nets to within single digits. At the end of the day, if were going to win in this league, weve got to come out with some type of edge, Kilpatrick said. If it takes something like that for us to have some type of edge, then its not good.Los Angeles is 6-2 in the last eight meetings with the Nets. Griffin scored 20 points in the Clippers blowout home win on Nov. 14 and had 21 in a 105-100 win in Brooklyn on Dec. 12 of last year. He flew the coop mid-year to a team now vying for a NRL premiership, but Canberra prop Joseph Paulo has likened the Raiders culture to that under Brad Arthur at Parramatta.Ahead of his first match against his former teammates on Sunday, Paulo is adamant the defensive steel that has defined the Raiders push to title contention isnt far removed from the resilience at the Eels.Parramatta, sitting in 14th spot, have been playing for pride over the past fortnight.Theres not too much difference, you know, Paulo said of playing under Raiders coach Ricky Stuart. The cultures the same. Rickys all for the boys and so was Brad when I was at the Eels. Down here, were building a good culture with all the boys buying into what Rickys got in place for us.As long as everyones putting their hand up and performing the way the coach wants us to perform, stringing together a few performances, then were going good. The wheels are beginning to wobble at Parramatta as the effects of a scandalous season begin to take their toll on the playing group, who put up little resistance last week against Brisbane.Itt was their fourth loss in five games, however Paulo insists the Parramatta players will tough it out for the rest of the season and provide a challenge for the third-placed Raiders at GIO Stadium.dddddddddddd.The Eels handed Canberra their heaviest loss of the season, a 36-6 humiliation, back in round six.The boys, theyre real resilient over there. They dont let nothing get to them, Paulo said.Theyve handled everything exceptionally for whatevers been happening off the field and on the field as well, losing a couple of the boys throughout the year.Theyve done solid. Its a test for us to come up against them. The 22-year-old believes there isnt much of a difference between the two clubs. The only difference I see is its much colder down here in Canberra than it is in Sydney, he said.I dont think they care much where they are on the ladder at the moment. Theyre playing for pride and, obviously, were playing for a good position for the back end of the year. ' ' '
South African cricket has done it again: arrived in a foreign land with a pace attack to savour. Back in the mid and late 1960s - before isolation - Peter Pollock and Mike Procter led their countrys rout of Australia. They would have done much the same to anyone else, given the chance. The production line continued through the wilderness years as Procters heroic deeds inspired fine men such as Vintcent Van der Bijl and Garth Le Roux - along with an array of variously talented other fast bowlers who would have held South Africas place at the top table of international cricket: think Clive Rice and Rupert Spook Hanley; Stephen Jefferies, Kenny Watson and others less noted. It is remarkable that more than two decades without global exposure did not compromise the quality of cricket in the Republic, never mind the desire - quick bowling is hard yakka and not often truly appreciated as such. The Currie Cup may never have been stronger than during the 1970s and 80s, almost certainly because it was the highest level of the game on offer and the provincial players tore into one another as if they were opponents from another land. Transvaal had a fantastic team; Natal were not so dusty either. The pitches were often spicy and fast bowlers dominated on the hard, bouncy surface at the Wanderers and the zippy greentops at Kingsmead. The international rebel sides that visited from 1981 through to 1991 were astonished by the intensity of the cricket and the ferocity and consistency of the quicks. So rewarding was life for the fast men that Sylvester Clarke, the huge Barbadian, signed up for Transvaal and completed the make-up of a unit that became known as the Mean Machine. When apartheid was finally broken down and the ban on South African sport lifted in 1991, briefly Rice and then Kepler Wessels led competitive teams with terrific pacemen. First out of the blocks was Allan Donald; close behind him were Fanie de Villiers, Brian MacMillan, Brett Schultz, Corrie van Zyl, Craig Matthews and Eric Simons. They soon won in England and drew a thrilling three-match series in Australia. Were it not for a memorable explosion of raw power and emotion from Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh in Barbados, they would have collared the West Indians too.Since then, Shaun Pollock and Dale Steyn have been at the head of bowling attacks that have included Jacques Kallis, Makhaya Ntini, Andre Nel, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander. As Kallis has long pointed out, batting in South Africa is no sinecure. The pitches are mainly kind to bowlers, who lick their lips. By this he means the fast men, for South African spin has mainly gone missing. Steyn is in Perth tomorrow, 12 years since he first showed promise on debut against England in Port Elizabeth. There have been few better in the history of the game. He is a terrific athlete with a smart brain and an alarming streak that might otherwise be interpreted as a cry to battle. Like Malcolm Marshall before him, the outswinger is his stock in trade and the inswinger a wicked, inside thigh-stinging addition to his arsenal. He need not break the speedometer to create an impression: he does so with a mad look in his eye, the killer zeal of his body talk, and that chainsaw celebration. Steyn relishes the Australian frontier more than any other and knows that he is running out of years. The present tally is 416 wickets at 22 each. Expect him to ride the threat of a shoulder niggle and play a key part in Perths first encounter of three.Alongside this leader of the band are some worthy players. Morkel loves Perth like the deserts love the rain. The trick will be to keep his length fuller than is obvious or, indeed, than looks exciting. Ball after ball flies through at the WACA but many are wasted in macho expression. Morkel took key wickets last time around; he is a good bet for the same again. Moreover, he has married an Australia girl, once a brave television sports journalist in her own country, and will be eager to confirm the bragging rights.Philander is a fine exponent of the old arts and subtle variations. On the exterior there appears to be little either to him or to his work, but hidden beneath is a craftsman in swing and seam. Perth may not be his venue, unless he can find the strength of a shire horse and operate into the Fremantle Doctor that plays its part each afternoon. That job may be awarded to Kyle Abbott, as willing a shire horse as any captain might find.Last in Steyns merry band is the most important of them all. Like Ntini back in the day, Kagiso Rabada bowls for a nation. He is the governments cause celebre and Cricket South Africas route to justification. But there is no tokenism in Rabadas selection - far from it. He has rare talent, a joyous spring of step, and lets rip at serious pace. With youth on his side, Rabada maintains his performance until the umpires pull the stumps from the ground each day. His eight Tests have yielded 29 wickets at 24 each and a strike rate of 38.9. Only Procter is ahead of him among South Africans who have taken 25 wickets or more. He bowls a natural off-stump line, and earlier this year forced England to nibble away at deliveries they would have chosen to leave alone. In the Centurion Test and at just 20 years of age, he claimed 13 for 144, the second best figures in his countrys history. Sure, this is only the beginning of a young mans life in the game, but the pedigree is clear. These bowlers could be the difference between the sides over the coming five days. Last years pitch for the Test against New Zealand was a drab thing that drew the teeth of every bowler in the game. Almost 1200 runs were scored in the first innings of the match as double-hundreds and mere hundreds were sprinkled around like confetti. The curator will not want a repeat, and thus, the surface should reveal some of its famed character this time around. It is hard to see the South Africans not making best use of it. How AB de Villiers, injured and watching from home, must be pining for this rivalry and the chance to fire such heavy artillery at the Australians. That is now a privilege belonging to Faf du Plessis. No one here can wait. The juices are running. Expect three crackerjack games between old enemies and many good friends. After a stellar 14-2 start, the Los Angeles Clippers have come back down to earth. The Clippers have won just four of their past nine games, facing injuries and the usual bumps of an 82-game season as they prepare to visit the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. The Clippers are not in dire straits by any means. They are as dangerous as ever. Even with Blake Griffin out Saturday, Chris Paul poured in 20 assists and had no turnovers in a win over the New Orleans Pelicans.Getting Griffin back in the lineup Monday, Los Angeles held on for a 121-120 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. It was a game where the Clippers showed off the potential and the devastating offense that ran through the league early in the season. But it also showed some of their flaws too -- the defensive lapses and the stagnation of the offense that sometimes slows the team down. The Clippers are back on the winning track, but things are not quite right still. It was a win. I didnt think we played great, but Ill take the win, Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers told the Orange County Register following Mondays win.The Clippers still rank in the top five in both offensive and defensive rating. That typically means the team is among the very best in the league.Since Thanksgiving, though, the Clippers have been much more middle of the road -- ninth in offensive rating and 16th in defensive rating. The certainly explains some of the slippage and the missteps the team has made in the last few weeks.L.A. is hoping the three-game road trip to the East Coast -- all against losing teams in the Southeast Division -- can help the team keep moving back in the right direction and back toward contention.ddddddddddddThe Clippers opponent Wednesday is doing some soul-searching of its own.The Magic entered last week with the third best defense in the league by defensive rating. This came as they won three of the first four games in a five-game road trip. The defense slipped last week, though. Orlando played four games in five nights to complete an eight-games-in-12-days stretch and struggled defensively. The Magic fell to 12th in the league in a matter of a week, giving up 100 points in all four games. It was the first time they had allowed 100 points in consecutive games since mid-November.Thats the biggest thing in the last four games, Orlando coach Frank Vogel said. We let our guard down for whatever reason on the defensive end. We have to return to form. Its got to happen a lot mentally rather than having three hard days of practice. Theres still not a lot of practice time. We have to get that end of the floor performing at a higher level. The Magic did not quite get their defense under control and back to an elite level in a 131-120 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. But, with just a three-point lead entering the fourth quarter, the Magic allowed just 24 points in the final 12 minutes to get some breathing room and protect their lead. For them, it will take more than a quarter of strong defense to hold off the star-powered Clippers as the Magic still seek some consistency and return to form. SEATTLE -- Bogdan Bliznyuk scored 31 points with 12 rebounds, Felix Von Hofe added 19 points and Eastern Washington defeated Seattle in double overtime for the second time in 12 days, pulling out a 93-88 win on Sunday.Von Hofe had a trey and Bliznyuk scored four points in a 9-0 run that gave EWU an 86-79 lead with 1:07 left in the second OT. Von Hofe, Sir Washington and Bliznyuk all made two free throws in the final 28 seconds to secure the win.Von Hofes late 3-pointer forced overtime as the Eagles erased a 14-point deficit. Seattles Morgan Means hit a 3 with 4 seconds to tie the game at 75 in the first extra session. The Eagles (6-2), who won the first meeting 80-76, made 11 3-pointers and went 20 of 22 from the foul line.Brendan Westendorf had 26 points for Seattle (2-5), which went 21 of 34 from the line. William Powell had 19 points with 10 rebounds and Aaron Menzies had 18 points with 16 boards. CINCINNATI -- Coach Marvin Lewis opened a notable week in the Bengals history by insisting that theyre not actually traveling to London for their next game. Were not going to London, he said. Were playing the Redskins and it happens to be in London.Oh. OK then.Lewis also challenged a question about their 8-hour flight, emphasizing that they dont have an 8-hour flight. Thats technically true -- its slightly less than 8 hours. He told his players that their game at Wembley Stadium will be no different than if they were playing in the aisles of a local grocery store.I think Marvin said earlier today that whether were playing at Krogers or were playing in here or playing over there, we cant lose the task at hand and thats beating the Redskins, running back Jeremy Hill said.Lewis avoid-the-obvious comments show how much hes concerned that the Bengals (3-4) could get knocked out of whack by the franchises first trip to London. They play Washington (4-3) on Sunday in a game they desperately need to win.The defending AFC North champions got flattened in Dallas and New England before beating winless Cleveland 31-17 at home last week. Theyre only one game behind division-leading Pittsburgh, which is missing injured quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.A win over the team coached by former Bengals coordinator Jay Gruden would leave Cincinnati in the middle of the chase heading into its bye week. A loss would send the Bengals into their bye with more of that unsettled feeling theyve had this season. Its huge, which is why (Lewis) is trying to make this as much of a home game, as much of our normal schedule as possible, tight end C.J. Uzomah said. Its a huge week for us.The Bengals fly to London after practice Thursday. Their only soak-up-the-moment event will be a reception at the Tower Bridge on Friday night. Players will have a few free hours as well. Otherwise, its all abouut football.ddddddddddddAt the end of the day, were going down there not to eat fish and chips, not to see the queen, but were going down there to handle some business, defensive tackle Domata Peko said. The Bengals have another reason to wish they were staying home: Itll count as one of Cincinnatis home games, which means they lose one at Paul Brown Stadium.Several players are big fans of whats known as football in England, and theyre looking forward to playing in a place with such history as Wembley.Oh yeah, I think theres been a lot of great matches played on that pitch, and I think for us its going to be another good one for us to go there and play on Sunday, said Hill, whos a fan of Real Madrid. The coaching staff has told players to make sure they get plenty of rest leading up to the game, given how the time change will affect them. Also, theyve been told theres no wireless access on the flight, so theyll have to entertain themselves without the internet.I think this will be a good bonding experience for the team, Uzomah said. Were going to be on a plane together for 8 hours, cramped. Well get up and youll hear people say, `Ah, this sucks. Well be going through all that together, which will be nice.Game notes LT Andrew Whitworth watched practice in a shirt and sweatpants on Wednesday. He suffered a concussion in the win over Cleveland and hasnt been cleared to return. Lewis says he will be cleared for the game in London. ... G Clint Boling also was held out of practice with a sore shoulder. ... CB Dre Kirkpatrick was limited by a groin injury. TE Tyler Eifert had a full practice after getting into his first game of the season on Sunday.---Online:AP NFL website: and AP NFL Twitter feed: ' ' '

Wragge hit 9-of-14 from behind the arc, matching Kyle Korvers school record for 3-pointers in a game set in 2003, as Creighton (16-3, 6-1 Big East broke a conference record with 21 treys in the rout. Nike Basketball Shoes Outlet . The Clippers were angry about blowing a big lead; the Kings didnt like being in that kind of hole and nearly digging themselves out only to lose. . -- Matt Kuchar and Harris English ran away with the Franklin Templeton Shootout, shooting a 14-under 58 on Sunday in the final-round scramble to break the tournament course record. PITTSBURGH -- Plenty of the numbers from Pittsburghs breezy 99-80 victory over Gardner-Webb looked pretty. Nike Basketball Shoes Wholesale .And none of them mattered to coach Kevin Stallings. Sure shooting 54 percent and never being challenged on Monday night was nice, especially three days after needing double-overtime to hold off Eastern Michigan in Stallings coaching debut with the Panthers. Yet Stallings is more concerned about whether his team is ready for a far sterner test on Thursday against SMU at Madison Square Garden in the 2K Classic. You look at our defensive numbers, they were indicative of a team that was not really wired into play, he said. Thats my fault. Thats my job.Cameron Johnson scored 18 points and made all four of his 3-point attempts for Pitt (2-0). Michael Young put up 18 points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes after being held out of the starting lineup for only the second time in his career due to a minor violation of team rules. Sheldon Jeter added 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.Still, the Panthers led the Runnin Bulldogs trade baskets early in the first half and for long stretches in the second. Stallings wonders if his players are getting a little too caught up in the free-flowing offense Stallings brought with him from Vanderbilt.Maybe Ive sent the wrong message about tempo and offense and things like that, Stallings said. Were not ready to beat anybody thats equivalent to us in terms of talent because we dont sustain any type of defensive intensity. At one point in the first half, Stallings pulled the entire starting five off the floor in frustration.I think he just wanted more effort and energy, Johnson said. He cited a lack of focus for that. Not that much was required over the final 30 minutes after a 10-0 burst that included a pair of 3-pointers by Johnsoon to give the Panthers a 30-14 lead that was never threatened. Cheap Nike Basektball Shoes Online. RUNNIN WITH THE PANTHERSLaQuincy Rideau finished with a career-high 23 points for Gardner-Webb (0-2) while adding eight rebounds and six assists. David Efianayi scored 20 points and Liam OReilly chipped in 14. The Runnin Bulldogs spread the floor to provide Rideau with room to slice his 6-foot-1 frame through the lane.I felt there was little more space where maybe we could attack the paint off the dribble, Gardner-Webb coach Tim Craft said. The problem is we werent converting. Some of the finishes were a little wild.BIG MAN DEBUTPitt junior Rozelle Nix made his long-awaited debut after missing last season with a foot injury. The 6-foot-11, 300-pound Nix entered with just over 4 minutes left and finished with four rebounds and on emphatic block on Gardner-Webbs DJ Laster that sent Nixs teammates erupting off the bench. He got me once like that once, Jeter said. Im not ashamed to admit it. Im not afraid to admit it.BIG PICTUREGardner-Webb: After managing just 44 points in a lackluster loss to SMU in the opener last week, Gardner-Webb was happy to try and keep pace with Pitt in what Craft called a learning experience for a young team that will rely on Rideau and Efianayi -- both sophomores -- to carry some of the scoring load.Pitt: Despite the defensive issues, the Panthers seem to have quickly embraced what Stallings wants to do on the other end of the floor. The Panthers made 13 of 26 3-pointers and finished with 29 assists on 35 field goals.UP NEXTGardner-Webb: plays Eastern Michigan in Indianapolis on Friday.Pitt: faces SMU on Thursday at Madison Square Garden. NEW YORK -- Traveling to the Olympics? Dont let illnesses meddle with your fun.Roughly half a million people from around the world are expected to travel to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. And while Zika is in the spotlight, there are other bugs and health problems that Olympic athletes and spectators should keep in mind.Whats the biggest threat? Health experts say the most likely cause of death or serious harm to travelers everywhere is injuries from car accident, falls, crime or other mishaps. But thats not whats on the minds of people headed to the Olympics, said Dr. Nicholas Van Sickels, associate director of Tulane Universitys travel medicine clinic in New Orleans.Zika is what brings them in the door, Van Sickels said of recent clinic visitors.A look at those health problems, and what athletes and travelers can do about them.---HOW BIG A THREAT IS ZIKA?The risk of getting sick from Zika is low, especially compared to other illnesses that a visitor to Rio might suffer. Its winter in Brazil; a time when mosquitoes that spread the virus are at a low ebb. But for mothers-to-be, the stakes are very high because an infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Thats why pregnant women have been told to stay away.---BUT HOW CAN I AVOID ZIKA?The virus is mainly spread by tropical mosquitoes, though it also can be transmitted through sex. Travelers can protect themselves from mosquito bites by, among other things, wearing long sleeves and long pants and using insect repellents. Also, stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens, the CDC suggests.---WILL I KNOW IF IM INFECTED?You might not. Most infected people do not get sick, and those that do usually experience only mild symptoms, like fever, rash, red eyes, joint pain, that ends within a week. But some infected adults have developed a paralyzing condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome.---WHAT ABOUT OTHER TROPICAL ILLNESSES?The same mosquito spreads other tropical illnesses, including chikungunya, which has been spreading in Brazil and other parts of South America in the last few years. It has some of the same symptoms as Zika, but the joint pain is often debilitating and can give people a stooped appearance -- the name chikungunya comes from a word meaning to become contorted. Like Zika, there is no vaccine or cure for it. There are vaccines or medicines for other mosquito-borne diseases seen in Brazil, including yellow fever, dengue fever and malaria. Those arent considered much of a threat for Olympic visitors, though.---WHAT ELSE COULD MAKE ME SICK?If a traveler to the Olympics gets sick, its most likely from drinking water or eating undercooked or unclean food, said Dr. Martin Cetron of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Food should be peeled, boiled or cooked. Avoid food from street vendors, and fruits and vegetables that have not been thoroughly washed, experts suggest. Drink bottled water or beverages. And maybe pack some medicine for diarrhea, Cetron said. Some swimming areas in Rio are contaminated with sewage, and the CDC advises avoiding swallowing mouthfuls of water and staying away from beaches with warning signs.---ANYTHING ELSE?Its flu season in the Southern Hemisphere, so expect that people in Rio may be sneezing or coughing and spreading flu germs. Flu and other respiratory illnesses are probably the second most common thing travelers to the Olympics will get, Cetron said. Wash your hands and drink lots of uncontaminated fluids, experts say.---WHAT IF I GET SICK IN BRAZIL?Eu me sinto doente. Thats Portuguese for I feel sick. Talk to a doctor or nurse if you feel very ill, especially if you have a fever, the CDC advised. The CDC website has information about finding medical care while abroad and also offers some health terms in Portuguese. Officials do not expect a lot of Olympic travelers to take Zika home with them. Researchers at Yale University recently estimated that there may be no more than 40 travelers going home from the Olympics with infections.---Online:CDC: LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- The Russian mens quadruple sculls team has been disqualified from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics for a doping violation, and will be replaced at the games by New Zealand, world rowings ruling body announced Thursday. The World Rowing Federation says that trimetazidine, a banned substance, was found in a urine sample given by rower Sergei Fedorovtsev in an out-of-competition test on May 17.He competed a week later at the final Olympic qualifying regatta in Switzerland, where Russia finished first to qualify for Rio.As Fedorovtsev, who won a gold medal in quadruple sculls at the 2004 Athens Olympics, had provided a positive doping test, the federation said that the results of all competitions in which the rower participated after 17 May 2016 are therefore automatically disqualified.New Zealand, which finished third behind Russia and Canada in the qualifying event, will replace the Russian crew in Rio. Canada also qualified by finishing second, joining the top eight crews who secured their Olympic places at the 2015 world championships, held in France. The disqualification of the rowers is just the latest doping scandal involving Russia ahead of Rio.ddddddddddddussias track and field athletes have already be banned from competing for their country for a systematic doping system that operated from the top down and tainted the entire team. The IAAF, tracks world governing body, upheld a ban on Russias track and field federation, but left open a tiny crack that would allow any individual Russian athletes who have been untainted by doping and have been subjected to effective testing outside Russia to apply to compete in the games.Russia, along with Kazakhstan and Belarus, also faces a possible one-year suspension from international weightlifting competition following the retesting of samples from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. The International Weightlifting Federation said the final decisions on whether the countries will be allowed to compete at Rio will be made after the International Olympic Committee makes a definitive ruling on the retests.Russia is one of six countries that have already had some of their quota places for Rio withdrawn by the IWF. FRANKFURT, Germany -- FIFA ethics investigators recommended a fine and community service on Thursday for a former high-ranking German soccer federation official for failing to report possible corruption surrounding the 2006 World Cup.Helmut Sandrock resigned as general secretary of the German federation in February. His former boss, federation president Wolfgang Niersbach, was banned from soccer for one year in July in the first sanction from the investigation into Germanys World Cup bid. Niersbach stepped down from the job in November but remains a member of FIFAs ruling council. The game was the first of a doubleheader at the United Center as part of the State Farm Chicago Legends. We were just trying to get to the finish line, Collins said. Fortunately, we were strong enough and did enough things to do that.Scoochie Smith had 18 points and Charles Cooke added 12 for Dayton (7-3), which had its five-game winning streak snapped. To our guys credit, I think you can see some fight, but we have to be more consistent, Dayton coach Archie Miller said. We have to be better. Whether it be the glass or our inability to run good offense, we just have not been as tough-minded as we needed to be against some of the teams weve played.Northwestern, which led by as many as 24, took charge early and appeared headed for a laugher. Had Dayton started the game with some of the fire it showed after halftime, the result might have been different.Northwestern: How the Wildcats perform during Big Ten play will ultimately determine whether they make their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in March, but theyve put themselves in good position with a strong showing in the non-conference portion of the schedule -- despite the limp to the finish line on Saturday. NUs two losses were against teams currently ranked (Butler and Notre Dame) by a combined six points.UNITED FRONTAlthough Northwestern has played 11 Big Ten tournament games in the United Center, it was just its second regular-season game.
