Its nearing the end of October, and with that comes pumpkin spiced everything, Halloween parties and that all-too-familiar gloom of turning back the clocks once Daylight Savings ends. But before we plunge headfirst into winter, lets not forget that Halloween season involves celebrating the season in style. Here, a few action sports icons show their almost-Halloween spirit, sprinkled by sponsor updates and changing of the guard-like themes.Brian Anderson meets Lady GagaFollowing a decade-long tenure with Girl Skateboards, Brian Anderson set out on his own path to start his own brand, dubbed 3D, in 2013. Anderson employed a small team and got to work producing boards, but after a few months of balancing the demands of being a pro while also running a brand, Anderson realized it was too much to handle. So he pulled the plug on the brand and started skating Antihero decks simply because he wanted to. A few months passed, and following a few exchanges between Antihero and Anderson, an agreement was reached to add Anderson to the pro team. And in the same week, Anderson met one of his idols, Lady Gaga, in New York (who was appearing on Saturday Night Live and Howard Stern.) So maybe it wasnt Halloween yet, but for a brief moment, Brian Anderson played the role of Lady Gaga entourage. Ozzie Newsome Womens Jersey. elly Slater and John John Florence as Gandalf and FrodoEarlier this week, Hawaiian surfer John John Florence grabbed the 2016 World Surf League world title in Peniche, Portugal. Fans saw the world title win as a sort of changing of the guard from old to new, with the Kelly Slaters of the world passing the torch on to the John Johns of the surfing world. Some fans even took it to Halloween-esque proportions of the Tolkien level, photoshopping Slater and Florence into the roles of Gandalf and Frodo. John John is on the path to be the next Gandalf, said Instagrammer Jakub Michna. FARMINGDALE, N. Ivan Provorov Flyers Jersey .Y. - This years Ryder Cup doesnt begin for another month, but the drama already kicked into high gear Sunday afternoon.Needing a result of third place or better at The Barclays to move up from the 12th position and claim one of the eight automatic qualifying spots on the United States roster, 54-hole leader Rickie Fowler played his final four holes in 3-over to finish in a share of seventh place.Zach Johnson, who was seventh on the list entering the week and hadnt been outside the top eight since his Open Championship victory last summer, retained the last qualifying position on the team.I just have to continue working on my game and continue getting better, said Fowler, whose fate now rests with U.S. captain Davis Love III. It was almost really good this week.Fowler will now wait and hope for a call from Love, who will make three wild-card selections on Sept. 12 after the BMW Championship and one more Sept. 25, directly after the final round of the Tour Championship. Among those also needing a captains pick are Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar and Jim Furyk. On Monday, Love said he would consider a number of options before making his captains picks.Anybody in the top 100 has to be our radar because a guy could get hot the next two weeks and move himself to the Tour Championship and be in the running for the FedEx Cup, Love said. And I get to pick him on Sunday night. The subplot between Fowler and Johnson wasnt Sundays only drama. Mal Meninga has prevailed in the battle of the Queensland greats with his Australia side ending the Four Nations campaign of Wayne Bennetts England with a 36-18 win in London. The Kangaroos ran in six tries at the London Stadium, ruthlessly running away with the game in the second half after a tightly-contested opening stanza that saw the tourists lead 10-6 at the break, in front of a crowd of 35,569.Having already been assured of their spot in next weekends final at Anfield following Scotlands shock draw with New Zealand on Friday, Australia had nothing but their pride on the line.England needed to avoid defeat to book a place in the decider at the expense of the Kiwis but any hopes of the Meningas men taking it easy never materialised as they showed their class and professionalism in a polished display.England drew first blood with an early Gareth Widdop penalty before Johnathan Thurston responded in kind in the 17th minute. The home crowd were on their feet eight minutes later when livewire winger Jermaine McGillvary finished off a smart move with a fine finish in the right corner.Widdop failed to add the extras and Australia hit back five minutes before the break when Blake Ferguson hauled in a bullet pass from Darius Boyd, before Thurston bisected the posts from the sideline to give his side an 8-6 advantage. The Kangaroos were then gifted two points on the siren when Josh Hodgson failed to find touch from a penalty and Sam Burgesss reckless taackle on Aaron Woods allowed Thurston to extend the lead. Jrue Holiday Jersey. Our experts weigh in on four of the biggest questions in NASCAR:Turn 1: Who is the best active restrictor-plate driver?Ricky Craven, ESPN NASCAR analyst: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Andrei Vasilevskiy Jersey . is the greatest restrictor-plate driver of his generation, but Brad Keselowski is certainly making his mark and, along with Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth, the three of them are close behind. Restrictor-plate racing is the most unique form of NASCAR competition. Driving a Sprint Cup car by yourself at Daytona and Talladega is among the easiest things youll ever do. Driving that same car at Daytona or Talladega on race day is among the most difficult. It requires many things, but most of it is confined to decision-making vs. car control. Some get better with time, acquire the skills (Kenseth) and some are born with the skills and the sense required at these tracks (Earnhardt).Ryan McGee, Dale Earnhardt Jr., but I think Brad Keselowski is closing in fast. Over the past five seasons Keselowski trails Earnhardt in average finish and top-5 finishes, but barely. Over that same span he has four wins to Earnhardts three. Immediately following the Daytona race I tweeted that Brad was really good at plate racing and was immediately pounced on by Junior Nation. Hey folks, Im not making it up. The numbers are what they are.John Oreovicz, For many years, the easy answer was Dale Earnhardt Jr. But after a nice little run in 2014 and 15, DEJ hasnt looked like himself at the plate races this year. Brad Keselowski seems to have taken over as the driver to beat over the past few years and now that he has a Daytona win under his belt it will be interesting to see how long it takes him to reach Victory Lane in the big race in February.Bob Pockrass, When looking at wins, it would be Brad Keselowski, with five since 2009. But in 67 career restrictor-plate starts, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has 25 top-5s (37 percent) and has led 1,553 laps (average of 23 a race). In 30 starts, Keselowski has nine top-5s (30 percent) and has led just 244 laps (average eight laps a race). And then theres the matter of Earnhardts two Daytona 500 victories, which came 10 years apart. They both have been at their best when theyve had great cars, but even if the brain says Keselowski at the moment, the gut says Earnhardt.Marty Smith, Somewhat like asking whos the best sports bettor. There are many very good ones, but every last one of them is subjected to the unforeseen -- and thus, the upset. Denny Hamlin is excellent. Matt Kenseth. Brad Keselowski. The Busch boys. Jamie McMurray. Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson. All big horses. But its Dale Earnhardt Jr. Hes the best of all time on plate tracks. Yes, I said it.Turn 2: NASCAR issued only fines to the drivers for the truck series fight at Gateway, John Wes Townley and Spencer Gallagher. Was that the correct decision?Craven: The decision made was probably the correct one. I really cant imagine anyone being frightened or concerned for the health of either driver, as it looked like less of a fight and more along the lines of a wrestling match from 1976.McGee: Yes. Anything more would have been overkill and would have drawn more attention to something that deserves to forgotten as soon as possible. I am still waiting on fines from the WBC, UFC and WWE for crimes against fighting.Oreovicz: In the Cup Series, I think at least one of them would have been fined, but in the Truck series, this fight almost provided comic relief. A Friday Night Fight undercard battle, if you will. They probably ought to at least put Townley on double-secret probation, given the number of skirmishes he seems to get into.Pockrass: No. Anyone who gets in multiple punches with a closed fist -- such as John Wes Townley did -- deserves a suspension. Unfortunately, we havent seen a good replay of the accident and the extent of the on-track retaliation. The whole thing, while somewhat entertaining and amusing, stunk -- a great race in the waning laps with a silly sideshow of drivers not in contention wrecking and fighting. Townley has been involved in too many wrecks and likely has had too many people want to deck him to be out there trying to enforce driver code.Smith: I guess. They engaged while on the racing surface, so theyre subjecting themselves to danger. That was the only danger to which they subjected themselves. That grappling match looked like a couple drunks at a music festival fighting over a girl.Turn 3: Everyone always seems to be in such a rush to discount any Brad Keselowski success. Why is one driver the target of so much animosity?Craven: Because he speaks his opinion -- he often says exactly what he believes -- and most people on the planet arent equipped with the ability to objectively listen to what he says and appreciate the honesty, even though when they might have a totally different view. It doesnt qualify a person as being wrong, you simply disagree. Many dont like him, or are not a fan of his, and that overrides the fact he is one of the few drivers still willing to give us an unfiltered version of his views and perspective. Im good with Brad, I appreciate how hard he worked to get where he is, and I hope he doesnt change. More importantly, I hope he continues driving as though he is seeking his first win. There is no substitute for hunger.McGee: I wrote a column about this at the height of him being ganged up on back in November 2014, and I dont think its really changed since then. I think people -- rivals and fans -- target him because they dont understand him. And then when they target him and it doesnt seem to bother him very much I think that drives them all even crazier. He subscribes to the Bob Sugar philosophy of this aint show friends, its show business and he firmly believes that its his business to do whatever it takes to get to the front. Weve applauded other racers for living that way, but it usually took a while for people to come around. I really hope that one day they come around on Brad. Love him or hate him, what he has accomplished is pretty remarkable ... and hes only 32.Oreovicz: He doesnt fit the mold of either the established driver stereotypes -- southern redneck or polished West Coaster. And hes not afraid to flaunt his different-ness, mainly by speaking his mind on just about any topic. On the track, his style is a lot like the late Dale Earnhardt, which is why it surprises me that more people dont back Keselowski.Pockrass: Because he has 20 wins and hes only 32 years old. He doesnt back down to other drivers. He doesnt think like other drivers. And he says what he thinks. So many disagree with that and view it in some ways as a lack of respect. But why is being the target of animosity a bad thing? You want friends mixed with sports? Go to your local softball league.Smith: Because he talks and he doesnt back off it. Its that simple. Brads very intelligent, very cerebral. Hes a thinker whos completely unafraid to verbalize his thoughts, opinions, concerns and potential innovations. Hes not rash. Hes not boastful. Hes calculated. And hes never afraid to say his peace. That pisses off a lot of people. It annoys his competitors to no end. Know what? He doesnt care. Heres the thing: If youre going to be outspoken, you have to be successful for the words to have any credibility. Brad can wheel, too. With the best of them.Turn 4: Would any driver other than Joey Logano catch as much heat for what happened between he and Kurt Busch on the last lap at Daytona?Craven: Yes, a guy named Kurt Busch, or perhaps his brother Kyle Busch just a few years ago. This thing ebbs and flows throughout your career. Joey Logano is in the early innings of a championship career, climbing the ladder always comes with challenges and what hes experiencing right now is very similar to what some of the greats experienced at some point in their careers.McGee: See the guy featured in the previous question ... and see the other guy included in this question.Oreovicz: Keselowski, because hes likely to care what his competition thinks after he wrecks them even less than Logano does. Given his position in grandpas team, Austin Dillon might take some heat, too, especially if he wrecked a VWA (Veteran With Attitude) like Kevin Harvick.Pockrass: Yes. Well, the one driver would be a she. If Danica Patrick accidentally wrecked Kurt Busch, she would get 10 times the heat of Logano. Maybe not from Busch, because theyre teammates, but it certainly would break the internet.Smith: No. Joeys aggression has frustrated competitors for a couple of years now. But so what? You get what you give in this life. Matt Kenseth had enough of it and planted him in the fence, costing Joey an opportunity to run for a championship. Vincent Lecavalier Jersey . SONOMA, Calif. Jace Sternberger Youth Jersey . -- In a yearlong celebration of Roger Penskes 50th season in racing, Simon Pagenaud brought yet another championship to trophy to one of the most storied organizations in motorsports. The Frenchman won his first career IndyCar title in his sophomore season driving for Penske, and did it in dominating fashion by winning the season finale Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.Pagenaud only needed a smooth race to put a wrap on this breakthrough season.Instead, he picked up his fifth win of the year and led a strong Penske finish to the final podium. The Penske team went 1-2-3 in the final series standings, the first team to do so since another Penske trio pulled off the sweep in 1994.That was a strong run and I take my hat off to the entire team, Penske said.A 14th IndyCar title -- and 29th in various forms of motorsports -- was guaranteed at the start of the race because only Pagenaud and teammate Will Power were mathematically eligible to win the title.Pagenaud entered the weekend 43 points ahead of Power, but earned an additional point for winning the pole. Then he led the most laps and won a race that was worth double points in the standings. What Im thinking about right now is, its been a long career, Pagenaud said. You start, seven years old. You go through a lot. I remember my first race in France in a go-kart. It was raining. I had my visor open because I had the wrong helmet.I still have that picture at home. The ground I covered since is quite incredible. I just feel so blessed to being a human that has been able to live his dream and get to this. I basically accomplished all the dreams I had.Pagenauds performance was a moot point, though: Power had mechanical issues 38 laps into the race that sealed the outcome.Obviously I saw Will slowing down, which I wanted this fight to go all the way, Pagenaud said. It was a bit of a relief, I have to say. I feel sorry for his luck.Probably needing to win to unseat Pagenaud, Power instead finished 20th. Pagenauds final margin was 127 points, the largest points win since Alex Zanardi defeated teammate Jimmy Vasser by 119 points in 1998.It was pretty realistic considering it was (worth) double points, Power said. Its just how it flows, when its your year, its your year, and Simon has done a phenomenal job to lead a 1-2-3 finish.Power finished second in the standings, Helio Castroneves was third and Chevrolet won its fifth consecutive manufacturer title since its return to IndyCar in 2012.Throughout the entire season, he was not only an amazing driver but a champion, Castroneves said of teammate Pagenaud. Really honored to be working with a guy like that. The whole team was a dream to work with and today was the proof of that. Its the fourth time Power has finished second in the standings, but it was easy to swallow because he won his only title in 2014. And, he missed the season opening race this year when IndyCar ruled him out with concussion-like symptoms -- it was an inner ear infection -- so climbing back into title contention was somewhat of a victory. If I hadnt won a championship, I guess it would be a pretty bad day, Power said. But finishing second, considering how I started the year, getting four wins, its a good year.A year after losing the title in the final race -- Juan Pablo Montoya led the standings wire-to-wire, but a Scott Dixon win in the finale cost Penske the championship on a tie-breaker -- the Penske organization cruised to the top of the series. The combination of Pagenaud, Power and Montoya won 10 of the 16 races.Across all motorsports, Penske this year also achieved its 500th pole, its 100th victory in NASCARs top Sprint Cup Series, and now an additional championship. The Penske team still has another shot: Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano both had top-five finishes Sunday in the opening race of NASCARs playoffs.GOODBYE TARGET: Scott Dixon didnt give sponsor Target the send-off it had hoped after 27 years in IndyCar.Dixon started the day tied for third in the standings and trying to keep his streak of finishing third or better in the standings every year since 2007.But he had radio issues, had to change his helmet during a caution, and finished 17th. It dropped him to sixth in the final standings. Its the lowest Dixon has finished since 2005.MONTOYA MOVING ON?: If Sunday was the final race for Montoya driving for Penske, he closed out his tenure on a strong note.Montoya finished third at Sonoma to bookend the year with podium finishes. He won the season-opener at St. Pete, but had a significant drop-off the rest of the way.Although Montoya won the Indianapolis 500 for Penske last year, the team owner is unsure if hell bring the Colombian back next year. Penske hopes to make a decision within 60 days on if hell field a fourth car, and who will drive it, and Montoya doesnt believe the door is closed yet on a return.ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Alexander Rossi finished fifth on Sunday to lock up top rookie honors for the IndyCar season.Rossi won the Indianapolis 500 for a huge bright spot on a season he otherwise believes failed to live up to expectations. Rossi had just one podium all year.Hes yet to announce his 2017 plans, and his name began to surface Sunday as a possible Penske driver next year.Wouldnt that be nice, Rossi said after the race. Darnell Savage Jr. Womens Jersey .ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. Paul Hornung Womens Jersey .5 seconds to play in the game, Kevin Love never stopped believing that they would come out of there with a win. . Sebastian Vettel reckons Ferraris pace at the Japanese Grand Prix demonstrated a big amount of improvement since the middle of the season.?Vettel had to settle for fourth at Suzuka after another questionable strategy call saw him put on the soft compound tyre and fade in the final stint after emerging behind Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari had out-qualified both Red Bull drivers on Saturday but started further down the field for separate penalties.I think theres been a lot of positives this weekend, Vettel said. Despite the penalty, the qualifying was very strong, the pace of the car was good in the race as well, we were probably the second quickest car out there. So a lot of positives. For sure, not entirely happy because if the podiums there for grasp and you dont take it then it always feels a bit disappointing. But as I said, a lot of positives. If you compare here to Silverstone, which in terms of track characteristics is similar, plus the fact it was quite windy, stuff like that, I think weve improved a big amount since that time.Despite finishing off the podium, Vettel refused to blame the risk Ferrari took on strategy or the numerous backmarkers he coomplained about during the race. Elgton Jenkins Packers Jersey. Vettel explained that the team was forced into its eventual strategy by trying to catch second-placed Max Verstappen early in the race.We had different plans for the strategy. ?We obviously had a great start, made good progress in the first couple of laps, gaining a few positions. I think we tried everything to put Max under pressure. He reacted by pitting a bit earlier, all the time, in both stops and we obviously didnt have the freedom in the second stop, as we would pit into traffic with Ricciardo. He could, because in the worst case scenario he could pass Daniel very easily. It was at that point [after the second stop] we decided to go longer in order to come back at the end of the race. Unfortunately the way it turned out the soft tyre didnt last very long and on top of that we lost a position as well to Lewis. But if you look at the position at the end to Lewis, I dont think there was anything we could have done to hold him because the gap to the podium ultimately too big. ' ' '
VANCOUVER -- Vancouver Whitecaps striker Darren Mattocks has been sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury. Julian Draxler Paris Saint-Germain Jersey . Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie said Mattocks underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday. The coach said the team does not put a time frame on recoveries, but he does not expect the Jamaican international to be out too long. "Hell be frustrated, but its not a major injury," said Rennie on Friday. "He just had his knee cleaned up a little bit. So it shouldnt set him back too much." Mattocks has struggled in his second Major League Soccer season after shining as a rookie. He has started just six of the 13 games in which he has appeared, recording three goals and one assist. The 22-year-old did not travel to Vancouvers last game in Los Angeles due to the knee injury. Mattocks knee started bothering him in the warmup before Vancouvers game against Chicago two weeks ago, but he still came on as a substitute in the final two minutes. Then it swelled up while he was en route to play for the Whitecaps reserve team against Real Salt Lake, said Rennie. Mattocks tested the knee in a couple of training sessions afterwards, and the club felt it should be cleaned up through surgery. Kevin Trapp Paris Saint-Germain Jersey . Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek defeated Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (4) on the indoor hard-court at Belgrade Arena. The victory improved the Czech pairs impressive cup doubles record to 14-1. BOYDS, Md. -- The Washington Spirit prevented Seattle midfielder Megan Rapinoe from kneeling again during the national anthem by altering its pregame ceremonies rather than subject our fans and friends to the disrespect we feel such an act would represent. The National Womens Soccer League team moved up the anthem, playing it while the teams were off the field at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Wednesday. We decided to play the anthem in our stadium ahead of schedule rather than subject our fans and friends to the disrespect we feel such an act would represent, the Spirit said in a statement. We understand this may be seen as an extraordinary step, but believe it was the best option to avoid taking focus away from the game on such an important night for our franchise. On Sunday before the Reigns match in Chicago, Rapinoe knelt during the anthem in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick -- the San Francisco quarterback who has refused to stand during the anthem to protest racial injustice and minority oppression. Rapinoe said at the time she planned to continue to kneel. To willingly allow anyone to hijack this tradition that means so much to millions of Americans and so many of our own fans for any cause would effectively be just as disrespectful as doing it ourselves, the Spirit said in the statement.Following the match, Rapinoe said she was saddened by the Spirits move.It was incredibly distasteful, four days before one of the worst tragedies in our country, to say I tried to hijack this event, The Washington Post quoted Rapinoe as saying.During the match, a group of supporters chanted Let Her Kneel! The Spirit said team owner Bill Lynch is a veteran who has lost friends in overseas conflicts, as had his close friends. The tradition of honoring our military and our patriotism before our games is very important to us, the statement said. We strongly feel that there are better ways to begin a conversation about a cause than tarnishing a tradition that is so important to so many.Earlier Wednesday, the Reign said they were standing by Rapinoe. In a statement, the team said it recognizes Rapinoes action was offensive to some and a source of inspiration to others. We will continue to encourage all Reign FC players to participate in the pre-match ceremony, which honors those who have served and made sacrifices on our behalf, the Reign said. We will also continue to allow players too participate in the pre-match ceremony in a manner consistent with their personal beliefs, reflecting our respect for the rights earned and defended by those fighting for our nation. Christopher Nkunku Paris Saint-Germain Jersey. Kaepernick drew attention when he remained seated on the bench before a preseason game against Green Bay. Last Thursday night in San Diego, he and safety Eric Reid knelt during the anthem before a preseason game against the Chargers. On Sunday night, Rapinoe kneeled during the anthem before the match against the Chicago Red Stars, in what she called a little nod to Kaepernick.I think its actually pretty disgusting the way he was treated and the way that a lot of the media has covered it and made it about something that it absolutely isnt. We need to have a more thoughtful, two-sided conversation about racial issues in this country, Rapinoe told the website American Soccer Now afterward. She went on to say: Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties. It was something small that I could do and something that I plan to keep doing in the future and hopefully spark some meaningful conversation around it. Its important to have white people stand in support of people of color on this. We dont need to be the leading voice, of course, but standing in support of them is something thats really powerful. The 31-year-old Rapinoe has been with the U.S. national team since 2006 and has played in two Womens World Cups and two Olympics. She has played for Seattle since 2013.Rapinoe injured her knee last December during training and required surgery, but played in the Rio Games. The United States, which had won three straight gold medals in the sport, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Sweden.Since coming out in 2012, Rapinoe has been devoted advocate for LGBT rights and has worked with the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and other organizations.Rapinoe also has been vocal about pay equity, and was among five national team players who lent their names to a complaint filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging wage discrimination. The players claim that members of the team make in some cases up to four times less than their male national team counterparts. ' ' '
Dutee Chand and Caster Semenya couldnt be more miles apart. Andreas Christensen Chelsea Jersey .Yes, they are both track athletes, but one is a 1.5m-tall middle-distance trail-blitzer and the other a 1.78m tall national 100m champion. Chand is from Chakagopalpur in India, while Semenya is from Potchefstroom in South Africa - an 8,082 km distance that would defeat even Google Maps.Yet these two women share one thing. Their bodies are at the frontlines of a simmering and freshly stirred debate between competitive sport and what constitutes gender identity. Semenya and Chands careers stand on the blurred boundaries between biological, anatomical, physiological and social definitions of what marks the separation between female and male in competitive sport. In fighting for the right to compete, Semenya and Chand are 21st Century challengers of athletics and Olympic sports gender-centric rules that have been rewritten over decades. Version 2011 of these rules - pertaining to higher than normal testosterone readings and hyperandrogenism - sought to establish a cast-iron biological fingerprint for female athletes and offered to engineer a solution for this gender-identity issue through unproven medical intervention. And their appearances at the Rio Olympics will once again amplify to the larger sporting world as their bodies refuse to fit conventional definitions of the female body - conventions that are tied in with some science and much social conditioning. So if you want to get your head around the story of Caster Semenya, you must listen to the story of Dutee Chand. And then the other way around.CASTERS STORYSemenyas past and present seem to occupy wider attention, and she has been making headlines again with her audacious resurgence over the past 12 months. In 2016, the South African has eaten up acres of track and timings in the 800m, an aerobic-anaerobic balancing act, the bruiser of middle-distance races. On July 15 - a little over a month before her first round in Rio - Semenya ran the event in 1:55.33 at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Monaco, the seasons fastest time. It broke her own South African national record, which had held for seven tumultuous years, and marked her fourth straight win in the Diamond League season. Before that race, Semenya had gone under 1:56 only once -- in her breakout 800 (1:55.45) as an unknown teenager at the 2009 Berlin World Championships. The event changed her life and was far from a celebration; it launched her as a figure of public debate. Now, after living in relative anonymity since winning a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics, Semenyas return to the Olympics and recent success has brought the ghouls looking over her shoulders again - raising doubts over her gender that originate from her physical appearance.Described as the most divisive athlete of the year (Sydney Morning Herald) and athletics next ticking time bomb, (The Times, London but reprinted in The Australian), Semenyas potential success in Rio is being turned into a red alert requiring a re-examination of as it appears, the very ethos of competitive sport.Womens marathon record-holder Paula Radcliffe told the BBC, When we talk about it in terms of fully expecting no other result than Caster Semenya to win that 800m, then its no longer sport. It sounds like pretty epochal, tipping-point stuff except for the fact that the definition of sport being addressed here is fairly amorphous. Well before female testosterone levels, doping in itself should have made capital-lettered Sport no longer Sport.Radcliffe was quick to add that Semenya should not be called out on this the whole time. She has done nothing wrong and the way her case was dealt with originally by the IAAF (athletics international governing body) wasnt fair. Its is not just Casters rights but all the women with elevated testosterone that need to be balanced with those that dont.Speaking on a BBC Radio 5Live podcast recently, British swimming Olympic medalist Stephen Parry said the discussion around Semenya had something voyeuristic about it because it is about gender. Can we not celebrate the fact that maybe she is a strong woman?, he said. We dont exclude others because they have physiology that suits their sport. The world, he reminded everyone, celebrated Australian swimmer Ian Thorpes large size-17 feet, which made him a a much better swimmer, but he was not excluded.Parry added that there was a danger in just focusing on just one measure of physiology. Weve highlighted testosterone but that is only one element of everyones physiology. As female participation and progression across competitive sport has accelerated, so too has the attempt to clearly define what in a female body could possibly constitute a distinct unfair advantage-bearing genetic male marker. After the first gender test on women athletes was officially conducted in 1950, the always-contentious science was to move from humiliating physical examination to chromosome testing in 1968. After gender-verification was discontinued at the Olympic Games in 1999, Semenyas astonishing debut at the 2009 World Championships led to another version of the gender verification test being carried by South African athletics authorities, putting the athletes career into deep freeze for 11 months. In April 2011, the IAAFs hyperandrogenism ruling came into play.Semenya was directly targeted by her competitors in 2009 - Italys Elisa Cusma, who finished sixth in Berlin, said, Shes a man. Commentators today ask that Semenya not be singled out as the totem for the (yet unproven) unfair advantage available to athletes with DSD (disorders of sexual development). Yet that particular runaway train has already left the station: the hyperandrogenism ruling was only put into place after her Semenyas 2009 success. Now, she must also contend with the cruel, judgmental beast that is social media. It is what shapes public opinion and builds consensus, turning the possibility of a Semenya gold in Rio into a threat to the hallowed entity called Sport.DUTEES STORYDutee Chand is the third of seven siblings born to a family of weavers in the village of Chakagopalpur. The Brahmani River runs alongside the village 90 minutes north of the state capital Bhubaneshwar, the same distance east of the shoreline and the Bay of Bengal. Her older sister, Saraswati, a state-level sprinter herself, had lifted the family out of economic hardship after being hired by the state police. Dutee trained alongside her sister and ran along the river, but she flew higher and further in the sport. An under-18 national champion in 2012, she won the 200 at the 2013 Asian Championships and, at 17, she was a senior national champion in the 100 and 200.She was preparing for the World Junior Championships in Oregon in June 2014 when she was asked by Athletics Federation of India to stop over in Delhi for routine tests. Fresh off gold medals in the Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Patiala, her aim was to line herself up for a spot on the Indian team for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The test request was unusual by nature - no blood or urine, but an ultrasound. After a planned move to Bangalore, she was sent another round of tests. This time, it was a far more detailed round of tests at a private hospital: blood tests, MRI, a gynecological examination, an ultrasound, as well as a karyotyping procedure, which allows a doctor extract cell samples to examine a patients chromosome patterns.A few days later, she was told she was ineligible for participation in Oregon and Glasgow. No reasons were given. She returned home crushed and confused before being hit with the knowledge that she had undergone a gender test and she failed it. She found out through the media that her body produced more testosterone than the normal levels found in women.I did not even know what the tests were all about, Chand was to say in an interview to ESPN. What saddened me were not the tests itself but being told that I couldnt compete.Emotionally, I think Im pretty strong... One of the things that very few people know about me is that my never cry, she adds. I may be crying a river inside, but I would have a smile on my face. What left me broken was knowing that all the hard work I had put in, all the hours of training from dawn to dusk and the money spent on my preparations had been wasted. She said, I dont feel sad because Im different from other girls in a certain way because I feel God does everything for a good reason. He gave me an opportunity to do something for my country and earn a name for myself so early in my life.If you read through Chands CAS case, the Athletics Federation of Indias vocabulary over its rationale of putting her through the gender tests, is bewildering and brief. The AFI informed the Sports Authority of India, (SAI) - an umbrella body charged with the overall administration of Indian sport - that there were definite doubts regarding the gender of Chand. The letter goes on to say that those doubts had also been expressed by the Asian Athletics Association regarding her gender issue.Despite those definite doubts being undefined and lacking detail, the AFI requested the SAI to perform a gender verification test. Whether it was a mere gender test (as pertaining to excess androgen in the female body), or a blanket gender verification test (which had been banned by the IOC and the IAAF because of the invasive examinations) was treated as immaterial. The test results were puzzling, and brought with them humiliation. Chand had grown up in a village, part of a community who knew nothing of gender tests, testosterone, androgens. They only knew the little girl who could run through their lanes faster than anyone they had seen before. Chand says, My parents, they are simple, God-fearing people. Im not sure that they even understood the full extent of what transpired. The original definite doubt complaint, she believed, could have come from envious rivals or their coaches. A few athletes who were probably jealous of my performances complained to the AFI, following which the tests were conducted. I dont blame the AFI. They were just playing by the rules. But I was really hurt by the manner in which I was trapped. But Chands belief in her identity as an athlete could not be silenced. She was told that if she underwent treatment for her condition, she would be fine. But the treatment and medicines could steal her chance to succeed at competitive sport. I thought to myself that sport is the reason people know me, she says. Its my dream and passion and I cannot abandon it. Even if that means I have to fight the system on my own, I wont quit. The system- be it Indian sporting federations or the government - has in the past been insensitive to individual athletes concerns. In a contest between the status quo and the athlete as underdog, Indian sports administration rarely fights for the underdog. Chand understands the AFI itself couldnt have fought on her behalf, but says a little sympathy never hurt. I requested an AFI official to allow me to compete since whatever the issue was not due to fault but he turned me away. That was when we decided to challenge the ruling. It became a multi-pronged campaign, unprecedented in? Indian sport, involving an entire cast of characters across nations. Leading the charge was the head of SAI, Jiji Thomson who had helped rescue Asian Games 800m silver medallist Santhi Sounderrajan out of a post-athletics life as a manual labourer. He convinced the Indian sports ministry to foot the bills in taking the case to the CAS and the importance of challenging the hyperandrogenism ruling.Sports gender studies researcher Dr. Payoshni Mitra had first alerted Thomson about Sounderrajan, and once again, put up her hand up for Dutee. She contacted a global team of scholars and lawyers who wanted to contest the IAAF ruling on Chands behalf. Along with Dutees Indian team, a multi-national task force fought for her -- American medical anthropologist Katrina Karkazis, Bruce Kidd, a former Canadian Olympian and sports gender equality activist, and Canadian sports lawyer Jim Bunting, whose firm worked pro-bono on the case. When the news about going to the CAS emerged, Chand says the AFI official she had gone to for help mocked me before we left saying I would never win.On July 24, 2015, CAS announced a decision that struck a hammer blow for activists of gender equality in sport and shook world athletics. It suspended the Hyperandrogenism Regulations for a maximum period of two years in order to give the IAAF the opportunity to provide the CAS with scientific evidence about the quantitative relationship between enhanced testosterone levels and improved athletic performance in hyperandrogenic athletes.Chand was free to run again. On August 12, she finished seventh in her heat at the Rio Olympics and 50th in the field of 64 runners in the 100m.CASTER & DUTEEIn Rio, there was no chance of Semenya and Chand sharing a track, but they may have run into each other in the dining hall. I have never met her but would love to, Chand says. Then, she adds with a laugh, More than questions, I think people will be curious to know who among the two of us is stronger.Over the last two years, Semenya has been in self-imposed exile at university, while Chand has been undaunted by a spotlight that in the past has stripped away the soul of more than a few women athletes in India. She realizes that while her CAS case was an individual matter, she was also fighting on behalf of wider group of female athletes with DSD. Like Semenya and others, Chand is trapped in a twilight zone between individual identity and the bodys own politics. In Rio, Chand believes the treatment that is meted out to her and Semenya could carry many mixed messages: I know some people may be applauding us, but deep down, revile us, hate our guts.Yes, many heavyweights still remained lined up against Semenya and Chand, regardless of the far more genteel Lets not single out Caster, but vocabulary used in the current argument. In the run-up to Rio, new IAAF president Sebastian Coe told The Times, London: We are talking people, not robots or machines here, and I dont want it to descend into an insensitive approach. The decision taken by CAS was, to most of us in our sport, slightly surprising. We have until July next year to appeal that decision and will have formed a view well before then. Two months before the CAS ruling, Semenya told BBC, I dont want to be someone I dont want to be. I dont want to be someone people want me to be. I just want to be me. I was born like this. I dont want any changes. It has never been formally confirmed, but is merely implied or assumed that the condition under which Semenya was allowed to compete again was that she undergo the IAAFs recommended testosterone-suppressing medication, medical and psychological after-effects. Her successes over the past six months are being linked to the fact that post the award in Chands CAS case, she has gone off the testosterone-suppressing medication and therefore regained her previous advantage.Dr Ross Tucker, a well-respected South African sports scientist and advocate of the hyperandrogenism rule, told The Guardian newspaper, She is proof of the benefit of testosterone to intersex athletes... Having had the restriction removed she is now about six seconds faster than she had been the last two years. The restriction removal here refers to the limit of the amount of testosterone deemed suitable for female athletes to compete (serum testosterone levels below 10 nmol/L, or nanomoles per litre). In response, Mitra, official mediator for Chand in the CAS appeal, told ESPN that Semenyas mediated settlement with the IAAF has always been confidential. She says, commentators do not and cannot know whether her testosterone levels are any higher now than they were one year ago.Semenyas timings over the past four years - from silver in London, to failing to make the finals at the 2015 Beijing World Championships and the sub 1:56 in Monaco -- could also have arisen from a combination of factors far removed from CAS rulings. A dislocation of her knee and the struggles following the injury, a tough emotional phase of her life leading to insufficient training, followed by her October 2014 move to Potchefstroom under respected coach Jean Verster.Semenyas history as the global face - and body - of unfair advantage in female sport, has thrown up an alternative but unverified version of events -- which through consistent repetition is being treated as the truth, the whole truth and nothing but. I cant stop running because of people, Semenya said to the BBC last year. If you have a problem with it, come straight to me and tell me. I cannot stop because people say no she looks like a man this and that. Its their problem, not mine.Chands return to the track has generated far less noise. She has remained the athlete she always was - Indias fastest sprinter. Less than two months following the CAS ruling, she won the 100 at the National Open Athletics Championships in Salt Lake, Calcutta, her first race in more than 12 months. All those who tried to oust me from the sport have realised that Im not someone who will give up without a fight. My comeback has certainly left them shaken. The entire episode has made me stronger. she told ESPN.In June, Chand became the second Indian to qualify for an Olympic 100m event since the qualification rules came into play since 2000, only the sixth Indian woman to get to the most glamourous event in track and field. She has broken the national record twice en route to Rio and the consequences of her determination to get there are considerable.Chand says, I have fewer friends now. Most of my relatives distanced themselves from me. Earlier, everyone used to like me, now the same people avoid me. I used to hang out with friends earlier on now Im scared to ask them to meet me since parents dont want their daughters to be with me.Previously, when I visited places with a female friend, people would ask, Is she your friend? now if they see me with a girl they ask, Is she your girlfriend? Perceptions have changed. What also worries Chand today is whether the CAS ruling could be overturned in 2017. Deep down, Im confused and uncertain about my future in the sport. If the rules are reinstated after the two-year period lapses, I may have to go to court all over again. The repercussions of the return to the ruling, she says, will be more than merely a strike down of her own career. Whenever theres a move to change things for the better, there will always be people who oppose it. Im hoping such a thing wont happen. If it does, Im not sure about the repercussions on the sport, but for athletes like it me it will be a huge blow. She is talking about her sport, athletics and her country India. Where track athletes usually come from families with extremely limited resources and sport is considered by their young as a way out of a life of economic struggle. If you look into the past of most athletes, you will possibly find want and poverty, Chand says. Her reason for taking up sport were the simplest: A first-place in school competitions meant pencils, tiffin boxes and books as prize. We did not have money to buy them so I started running to win them. The most you can get out of athletics is a name for yourself.Sport gives girls from economically-deprived homes and conservative communities, their first freedoms. Chand stands at the other end of the spectrum that bothers athletes like Radcliffe and Coe. Chand says, If those rules are back, athletes will lose faith and families will be reluctant to allow their girls take up the sport, since fear will set in. A playing field which is far from level to start with, Chand says, will distance itself from its least resourced.Chands response to the solution of putting female athletes with hyperandrogenism into the male competition lies between disbelief and derision, We are struggling to qualify and win a medal among women at the Olympics, how would we compete with guys? Duniya ke liye toh who ladka ban jayega, lekin khud ke liye toh woh ladka nahi ban sakta. (Okay, so world will make that girl into a boy, but in her own eyes, she cant become a boy, can she?)The idea that, along with Semenya, she could help push back against doomsday scenario being raised and rather promote greater gender equality in sport interests Chand. Why not? Hopefully, we get a chance to meet and talk about it. My knowledge of English isnt too good but maybe I could have someone convey my thoughts to her and hers to me.Girl-talk about being a different kind of girl.Chand said the CAS ruling worked for many other athletes like me around the world. The wrong thought process behind the rule was brought to light. If the rule is done away with for good if would help so many athletes.Semenya and Chand might well occupy two parallel sporting universes but today they are rendered inseparable, their lives and histories tied together.Consider these words - Everyone has an equal right to live in this world and its not fair to expect that each of us will be alike. It doesnt matter who said it.Caster and Dutee would both agree. Andreas Christensen Jersey . GOTHENBURG, Sweden -- Henrik Lundqvist is fresh off the days workout, an hour on the ice followed by a session at the gym. JJ Arcega-Whiteside Youth Jersey . The New York Rangers goaltender has found a table in the back of the cafeteria at the Frolunda Indians practice center here. Hes way in the back, where he can sit and eat his lunch in peace and quiet.Except that hes being pitched a charity project. The person making his pitch surely feels like hes the most important in the world at the moment, as Lundqvist is focused directly on him, seemingly oblivious to anything else taking place in the cafeteria. The man thanks him, they shake hands, and Lundqvist returns to his lunch.Hes dressed in black, from his New York Yankees cap to his T-shirt, to jeans -- fashionably ripped, just right -- all the way down to his shoes. On his left arm, he has a tattoo of the name and birthday of his first-born daughter, Charlise, and on the blocker side arm is an ode to his second daughter, Juli.Maybe it has something to do with his age -- his dark beard now has a few gray hairs -- or maybe its the fact that hes back in Gothenburg, eating the most Swedish of lunches, meatballs and mashed potatoes. But theres an aura of calmness around Lundqvist, 34.He also looks fit, very fit.In my last years in Sweden, I weighed about 190 pounds, he says in Swedish. Then, when I got to the NHL, I got a little heavier, year by year, until I was close to 200 pounds, where it stayed for years. My last three seasons Ive been back at 190. And now I weigh 185 pounds, which I think is a good weight for me.He says that focus on fitness has helped him keep pace an an ever-more demanding NHL.Playing in the league has become physically a lot tougher, says Lundqvist. The young players who enter the league now are much better prepared for it, and the demands are simply higher. So you have to take care of yourself. In 2012, Lundqvist -- who had been nominated in each of his first three seasons -- finally won the Vezina Trophy. He has been one of the best goalies in the world since he entered the NHL (and arguably even before that) in 2005. In fact, he had never finished outside the top six in Vezina voting since then. Until last season.Lundqvist didnt get a single vote after the 2015-16 season, despite posting the seventh-best save percentage in the league and winning 35 games, tied for fourth in the league, while facing the most shots in the NHL. His save percentage, .920, was only .01 below his career average, and only once had he posted a better even-strength save percentage than last seasons .934.So why didnt he get any love for the Vezina? Maybe Lundqvist has raised the bar a little too high. Or maybe the GMs didnt vote after the regular season after all, because Lundqvists postseason numbers werent pretty. His playoffs save percentage was .867 and his goals-against average was 4.39.Back in Gothenburg, he has made peace with the fact that the Rangers season ended way too early, as he puts it, with a first-round loss to the?Pittsburgh Penguins. It was difficult to analyze because overall, I was pretty happy with the way I played and there were some things that I did very well, but then we were steamrolled at the end. How do you grade that? he says.Hes not looking back, but hes not looking too far forward, either.Thats also the one piece of advice the 34-year-old veteran goaltender would give the 23-year-old Henrik Lundqvist when he entered the league.Live in the now, he says. Of course I had big dreams and goals, but that makes it easy to have expectations that are too high. Maybe you forget to enjoy what you have now. You have to live in the now to truly appreciate it, but also to get the most out of yourself. We [NHLers] have it good. Its fun to play and travel and I think I appreciate it more now than when I was younger, he adds. That does sound like a wise man speaking. Hes focused on the here and now. He has been to the Stanley Cup finals, and while he wants to get back -- and win -- more than anything, he realizes that he cant force his way back. Its silly to look too much ahead. You just try to reset everything, Lundqvist says. Its a long journey there, and everything has to go our way, so you just wipe the slate clean and start from square one. And its mentally consuming to think about the playoffs now. Right now, I think of the next few weeks and coming to the rink, working out well, working on the details of my game.On Monday, Lundqvist reported to Team Swedens World Cup camp held, conveniently for him, in Gothenburg. Just like with the Rangers, all eyes will be on Lundqvist when Tre Kronor begins play. In the last best-on-best tournament, the Sochi Olympics, Sweden reached the final, as Lundqvist played every single minute of the tournament and posted a respectable .943 save percentage.Playing under pressure is a part of being a goaltender, and its inspiring to play well and be a decisive factor in the game, says Lundqvist, who also backstopped Sweden to an Olympic gold in Turin in 2006. Theres the pressure, but theres also the thrill of it.His teammates during that run included Nicklas Lidstrom, Mats Sundin?and Daniel Alfredsson. All three are now Team Sweden management advisers.I think its fun to be with the national team. Its often a little polite in the beginning, very Swedish, but the longer were together, the more we expect from each other, says Lundqvist.
